Glen Ridge Borough Advances Affordable Housing Plan While Honoring Emergency Management Leadership
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Glen Ridge Borough Council meeting, the council focused on advancing the borough’s affordable housing agenda and recognized the transition in the Office of Emergency Management leadership. The council endorsed the “Round Four Housing Element and Fair Share Plan,” aimed at addressing New Jersey’s affordability issues while ensuring strategic redevelopment opportunities. Additionally, the appointment of a new emergency management coordinator was approved, appreciating the service of the outgoing coordinator.
The council’s decision to endorse the “Round Four Housing Element and Fair Share Plan” was highlighted as a step towards addressing New Jersey’s broader affordability problem. The plan aims to create more affordable housing options, including lifecycle housing for various demographics such as first-time homebuyers, seniors, and essential workers. The plan obligates the borough to address 25% of its prospective housing needs through designated redevelopment areas, encouraging gentle density concepts like duplexes and townhomes. This initiative will be closely aligned with the borough’s historic preservation standards to maintain community character.
In the meeting, appreciation was expressed towards the borough staff and planning consultants for developing a plan within a tight timeframe. The council emphasized the plan as an opportunity to thoughtfully integrate affordable housing into Glen Ridge.
In addition to housing, the meeting saw the appointment of Captain Dean Nardellis as the new emergency management coordinator, succeeding Ann Marie, who was commended for her exemplary service during challenging times like COVID-19 and various natural disasters. Her tenure was marked by adept handling of emergencies, and the council expressed gratitude for her contributions.
