- Meeting Overview:
In a decision, the Glen Ridge Borough Council has approved a resolution to move up the borough’s property tax revaluation from October 1, 2027, to October 1, 2025. This adjustment aims to address discrepancies between actual property values and current assessments. The council believes this revaluation will help ensure a fair allocation of the tax burden among property owners.
The revaluation was prompted by directives from the County Board of Taxation, which identified a widening gap between market values and assessed values. The council emphasized that the purpose of the revaluation is to adjust the distribution of property taxes rather than to increase the overall tax revenue.
Another notable discussion was initiated by a representative from the Glen Ridge Public Library. The representative expressed gratitude for the town’s support and announced an ongoing community survey, which aims to gather feedback to improve the library’s services. The survey, which began on September 19 and will run until October 30, has already received about 340 responses. The library plans to follow up with qualitative data collection, such as focus groups and listening sessions, early next year.
During the public comment session, a resident raised concerns about the condition of road speed bumps on Washington Avenue, which were reportedly ineffective. The council acknowledged the issue and agreed to inspect the speed bumps and consider necessary repairs in the spring.
Additionally, the council passed a resolution for a shared services agreement with Bloomfield to comply with state law requiring lead inspection services for rental units. This agreement is intended to streamline compliance efforts and ensure that rental properties meet health and safety standards.
In another resolution, the council authorized an on-premise merchandise raffle and 50/50 for the Glen Ridge High School Home School Association, scheduled for October 5. This resolution passed without opposition.
The council also addressed a community concern about the height of grass on the soccer fields at Hurrell Field. Adjustments have been made in response to feedback from the high school soccer team and youth soccer organizations. The council will continue to monitor the situation to ensure the fields are maintained appropriately.
Finally, the council discussed an upcoming water meter replacement project, which will involve replacing every residential water meter in the borough. This project will also include an inventory of water lines to assess the presence of lead, galvanized metal, and other materials. Homeowners will be required to schedule appointments for the meter replacement.
