- Meeting Overview:
The Glen Ridge Borough Council convened recently to address several issues, including the approval of a new tree ordinance and the allocation of funds for public safety improvements. The most topics were the introduction of an ordinance regulating tree removal on private property and measures to enhance school zone safety.
The council introduced Ordinance 1811, aimed at tightening regulations around tree removal on both public and private properties. This decision aligns with new stormwater management rules implemented by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). The ordinance establishes a permitting process for the removal and replacement of trees on private property and sets an application fee of $100 per tree, with an additional $100 placed in escrow for two years to ensure the trees remain in good condition. Trees deemed invasive or hazardous by a licensed tree expert will not require a permit. This move aims to balance environmental protection with property rights.
In addition to the tree ordinance, the council addressed safety concerns as schools prepare to reopen. They announced plans to install a four-way stop and speed humps at the intersection of Forest Avenue and Sunset Avenue by 2025. This decision follows a traffic study aimed at mitigating ongoing complaints about speeding and unsafe conditions in the area. Additionally, there will be an increase in pay for school crossing guards to ensure full staffing and the introduction of flashing pedestrian signs and LED stop signs to enhance safety around school zones.
The council also passed several financial resolutions. A notable one was the approval of a $150,000 allocation for public works improvements, including new vehicles and equipment for both public safety and public works departments. This funding aims to enhance the borough’s capacity to respond to emergencies and maintain public infrastructure.
Another resolution was the renewal of the agreement with the Township of Bloomfield Board of Health for public health services, highlighting the ongoing collaboration between the two municipalities to ensure the well-being of their residents.
Lastly, the council acknowledged the community’s resilience and teamwork in responding to a recent storm that caused localized flooding. The council thanked staff and public safety officials for their swift and effective response.
