Glen Ridge Borough Faces Sewer System Challenges Amid Attorney’s Commendation
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Glen Ridge Borough Council confronted concerns about the local sewer system, following severe flooding incidents in certain neighborhoods, while also acknowledging the service of the borough attorney, John Malyska. Residents voiced their distress over the sewer issues, seeking solutions and accountability, as council members praised Malyska’s long-standing contributions to the community.
The meeting’s most urgent topic was the sewer system issues raised by several residents, particularly those from Hathaway Place, who experienced significant flooding and property damage. George Frost described the incident, attributing it to problems with the sewer system. He recounted the ordeal, noting, “An hour later, excrement was coming out of our houses,” and criticized a sewer company, Mountain Side, for their lack of response. The severity of the situation was underscored by another resident, Stephen Smith, who found several inches of raw sewage in his basement, despite having lived in the area for 27 years without such problems. Smith expressed his confusion and concern, stating, “I had my basement rebuilt many years ago… I was overwhelmed that night.”
The council members acknowledged these concerns. Residents sought written support from the council regarding the liability associated with the sewer problems.
In the midst of these concerns, the borough council also took time to honor John Malyska, the borough attorney, for his exemplary service. A plaque was presented to him, recognizing his dedication and legal expertise, which had guided Glen Ridge through numerous challenges, including affordable housing and personnel matters. Malyska’s ability to manage complex legal issues, simplify them for non-experts, and maintain calm during tumultuous situations was praised by various council members. One member noted, “John does more on weekends and vacations than most of us do during the week,” highlighting his unwavering support and availability.
Malyska, reflecting on his tenure, shared insights into his initial hiring due to his environmental expertise when the town was designated as a Superfund site. He emphasized the evolving challenges faced by the town and the cooperative spirit among officials and staff. Expressing gratitude, he stated, “It’s been an honor really to serve as long as I have.” His remarks were met with appreciation from attendees, including Daniel, the mayor from another municipality, who acknowledged Malyska’s dedication amidst leadership transitions.
Separately, the council addressed routine business matters. The finance and administration committee presented a resolution to approve claims and draw warrants totaling $560,599, which passed unanimously. Public safety updates revealed no new developments, but the council did pass a resolution reaffirming the borough’s civil rights policy with a zero-tolerance stance against discrimination and harassment.
Transportation updates were shared, announcing a town hall meeting to discuss replacing the Jity service and ongoing talks with New Jersey Transit about expanding train services. Councilor Teriano provided an update from public works, authorizing the purchase of additional water meters for $42,530, which passed unanimously.
