- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Glen Ridge Borough Council meeting, the council passed financial resolutions, including the introduction of the 2024 municipal budget, featuring a 3.32% increase in the municipal tax levy. The council acknowledged the efforts of the administration and department heads in preparing the budget. The session was also marked by the recognition of local Eagle Scouts for their community projects and discussions on public safety measures, including the funding for automated license plate readers.
During the meeting, the council addressed essential financial matters that affect the borough’s fiscal planning and management. The budget for the upcoming year was one of the primary topics, with the council discussing and passing Resolution 72-24. This resolution introduced the proposed budget for 2024 and detailed a 3.32% rise in the municipal tax levy. The increase in the levy is a critical point for residents as it directly impacts their property taxes. The council moved to ensure transparency and accessibility of budget details by posting the information in the local paper and on the Borough’s website, setting a public hearing for May 13, 2024.
The council also passed Resolution 71-20, which allowed the municipality to participate in the annual budget examination by the local Finance Board. Additionally, Ordinance number 1804 was passed on first reading, concerning the municipal budget appropriation limits and the establishment of a cap bank, which is a mechanism that provides the borough flexibility in managing its appropriations within the confines of state law.
Public safety was another focal point of the meeting. The Public Safety Committee provided updates, including the introduction of a three-way stop to improve traffic conditions and the approval of an Al Grant, which will fund automated license plate readers. These readers are tools for law enforcement to enhance community safety and streamline policing efforts.
The meeting also celebrated the achievements of several Eagle Scouts, who were honored for their contributions to the community. These young individuals were recognized for their diverse projects, such as renovating a local building, organizing a narcotics overdose prevention training, creating a rain garden, educating on the environmental impacts of latex balloons, and improving the volunteer ambulance squad headquarters. Their efforts exemplify the positive impact of youth leadership and civic engagement in Glen Ridge. The council president expressed gratitude to the Scouts and their families and mentioned the upcoming Scout Day.
In addition to these notable discussions, the council touched upon the consent agenda, which included resolutions authorizing road closures for upcoming events. Council members also highlighted initiatives for Earth month, focusing on environmental stewardship with activities like community garden cleanups, Tony’s Brook cleanup, and a repair Cafe at the train station.
The meeting concluded with reports from council members, though not all members had reports to present. The council then moved to adjourn the meeting. Following the adjournment, Second Chance Matt was made available to answer any budget-related questions from the public.
