- Meeting Overview:
The recent Gloucester Township School Board meeting saw a focus on addressing chronic absenteeism, a celebration of student achievements across various schools, and farewells to departing board members. The board discussed corrective action plans for absenteeism rates, recognized students for their contributions and achievements, and reflected on the service and impact of outgoing board members.
A major topic of concern was the chronic absenteeism rates that had exceeded 10% at eight of the eleven schools in the district, prompting the requirement for corrective action plans. Despite most schools meeting the state average, this threshold necessitated intervention at the district level. The two smallest schools, Glendora and Union Valley Elementary, were not subject to these requirements. A parent survey conducted to understand perceptions about attendance received nearly 2,000 responses. However, the survey revealed a disconnect between parental perceptions and the legal definition of excessive absenteeism, with over 40% of parents unaware of the state’s definition. This underscored a need for better communication regarding attendance policies.
The survey also highlighted that around 20% of parents felt they lacked a designated staff member to consult about attendance issues, which prompted the administration to enhance communication and support for families. The board emphasized early intervention plans tailored for individual students and the importance of positively incentivizing attendance rather than relying solely on punitive measures.
Alongside discussions on absenteeism, the meeting celebrated student achievements. The session began with an event recognizing students and staff for their contributions and successes, which necessitated a change in venue to accommodate the large number of attendees. Students from Lor Elementary School were acknowledged for their charity work, particularly a veteran’s collection drive. The assistant superintendent stressed the importance of recognizing the diverse achievements of students, saying, “This is a great opportunity for us to recognize some of our students.”
Tia Jones, a principal, expressed gratitude for the chance to recognize student athletes. Various coaches highlighted their teams’ accomplishments, including the cross-country and field hockey teams’ successful seasons. The girls’ soccer team, with an impressive record, was also celebrated, with an emphasis on balancing education and athletics, as all team members were on the honor roll or principal’s list.
In addition to student recognitions, the meeting addressed the need for improved support for special education. Public comments brought attention to the challenges faced by special needs students and their families, with calls for better communication and accommodation during Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings. The board acknowledged the necessity of establishing a robust Special Education Parent Advisory Group (CPAG) to ensure ongoing engagement and support.
The meeting also featured a report on the student safety data system, detailing incidents of violence, vandalism, and substance-related offenses. The supervisor clarified that the reported data reflected police notifications rather than actual calls.
As the meeting progressed, the board took time to express appreciation for departing members Linda Gilch and Mr. Marks, reflecting on their dedication and contributions to the community. Their service was praised, with recognition of their efforts to enhance educational opportunities, such as the implementation of full-day kindergarten and expanded sports programs. The departing members expressed gratitude for the trust placed in them and emphasized the importance of supporting public education and the community.
In a reflective tone, one board member shared their journey, highlighting achievements and urging colleagues to prioritize community needs over personal agendas. The session concluded with expressions of gratitude and hopes for continued growth and success within the district. The board welcomed new member Dina Hendry, anticipating her contributions and fresh perspectives.
