Goodhue City Tackles Pickleball Court Issues and Appoints New Council Member
- Meeting Overview:
In its recent meeting, the Goodhue City Council addressed several topics, including the concerning condition of newly installed pickleball courts and the appointment of a new council member.
A significant concern at the meeting was the rapid deterioration of the city’s pickleball courts, which developed substantial cracks and defects within two months of installation. These issues were identified before winter weather could have affected the courts, leading to frustration among council members about the quality of work and ground preparation. There was a particular focus on whether the contractor, Sport Court, had physically inspected the courts or merely responded to photos shared via email. The mayor confirmed that only photographic evidence had been exchanged, prompting a request for these images to be reviewed further by a council member. The funding for the courts, sourced from co-op money rather than city funds, was intended to enhance community amenities. The council stressed the importance of holding the contractor accountable and ensuring the issues were addressed promptly.
In another notable development, the council appointed Janine as a new council member. In a move to ensure efficient governance, Janine’s swearing-in was conducted during the meeting, following a unanimous vote to accept her appointment.
The council also navigated the procedural intricacies of setting a public hearing for a variance request. Scheduled for February 26, 2025, the hearing will provide a platform for residents within a 350-foot radius of the concerned properties to express their views.
Another pressing matter was the condition of the city’s aging plow truck. The vehicle, a 2001 model used for snow removal, was in poor condition, often leaking fluids and requiring constant repairs. The council deliberated on the necessity of acquiring a new truck, weighing the benefits of purchasing a new vehicle against those of acquiring a used one from an auction. The recent availability of $30,000 from a TIF distribution provided a potential funding source for the purchase. The conversation also touched on the need to establish a systematic approach to funding infrastructure improvements, similar to the method used for police vehicles, to avoid future shortfalls.
Further discussions involved the resolution of a recent gas issue affecting homes in a new subdivision. The problem, linked tentatively to either a plastic obstruction in the line or landscaping compression, was addressed with the help of an outside contractor. Measures included the delivery of propane tanks and the replacement of a control panel for a water heater. Following these interventions, the gas flow normalized, although ongoing monitoring was planned to ensure stability.
Additionally, the council discussed the continuation of an agreement with the Alliance Club concerning Section 8 housing and explored the cost-effectiveness of managing its own snow removal operations versus contracting these services. The dialogue emphasized the importance of evaluating operational needs and financial implications before making a decision on the plow truck purchase.
The meeting concluded with routine administrative actions, including a motion to pay the bills and discussions on the categorization of vacation hours and engineering services for senior living projects. A representative of the Goodhue-Belchester Rail Riders sought approval for a cash raffle in August, transitioning from previous raffle formats. The necessary paperwork for this event was slated for preparation and adoption in an upcoming meeting.
