- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Greater Lowell Technical School Committee, the most discussion revolved around the approval of a student trip to the National Educators Rising competition. The committee unanimously approved the trip for seven students and two chaperones to Washington D.C., scheduled for June 27th through July 1st. The total cost approved for the trip is $1,868, which includes registration fees, flights, hotels, and meals.
The students, part of the Educators Rising club, had achieved success at the state level, placing second in the interactive bulletin board contest and first in the children’s literature and teacher-created materials competitions. During the meeting, the students shared their experiences and aspirations in education, expressing their excitement about attending the national competition and representing their school.
In addition to this approval, the committee also discussed several financial matters, including the approval of expenditures totaling $3,528,481.03, acceptance of donations totaling $4,525 from the Greater Lowell Community Foundation for student activities and scholarships, and another donation of $2,638.88 from Lowell General Hospital staff to assist health and medical assistant students.
Another financial decision was the amendment to the current year’s budget. The amendment included navigating the complexities of net school spending requirements and utilizing $200,000 from the excess and deficiency funds to address a shortfall. The new total budget figure was amended to $59,253,486.12.
Furthermore, the committee approved a 4% salary increase for the 2024-2025 school year for the District Treasurer, Senior Assistant Principal, Assistant Principal, School Business Administrator, and School Committee Recording Secretary. Additionally, the contracts for the Assistant Superintendent and Superintendent were renewed with a 4% salary increase.
The meeting also addressed the continuation of the school choice program, despite currently having no participants due to an extensive waiting list for the school’s programs.
