Greater New Bedford Regional Technical School Committee: Students Drive Innovation with Cuddy Hunk Island Wind Energy Project
- Meeting Overview:
The Greater New Bedford Regional Technical School Committee meeting, held on January 8, 2025, showcased a variety of initiatives and updates, with a focus on an innovative project spearheaded by students from the Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical High School.
The Cuddy Hunk Island project, presented by the engineering department, featured a collaboration between Greater New Bedford Vocational Technical High School and the Cuddy Hunk STEAM Academy, focusing on offshore wind energy. Supported by a $73,000 grant from the South Coast Community Foundation, the project allowed students to engage in practical applications of their studies in renewable energy. The grant, co-written by Michelle Carvalho, enabled students to extend their learning beyond the classroom, contributing to the development of an innovative offshore wind farm curriculum aligned with Massachusetts Career Technical Education Frameworks.
The project aimed to prepare students for advanced placement opportunities while enhancing their understanding of renewable energy careers. Students were initially tasked with studying the physics of electricity generation and constructing electrical generators integrated with KidWind turbines to test various factors impacting energy efficiency. This foundational work was expanded through interdisciplinary collaboration, engaging students in electrical, carpentry, and welding tasks to design and build a testing and monitoring station. Field studies on Cuddy Hunk Island involved gathering data on wind speed and direction to determine optimal turbine placement, culminating in the installation of a 1600-watt turbine.
Community outreach was an important part of the project, with students presenting their progress to the island community and setting up displays during an open house to promote offshore wind energy awareness. Senior student Aiden Cardo detailed the project’s inception, including the construction of two wind turbine towers—one at the school and the other on the island—and explained the data collection process through a complex electrical system. Students learned various engineering principles, such as generator construction and the effects of blade design on wind power efficiency. Their work was facilitated under the guidance of teachers from multiple disciplines.
In addition to the Cuddy Hunk Island project, the meeting addressed other district initiatives and updates. The committee reviewed a mid-year update on district goals, with a focus on providing high-quality, engaging learning experiences. Key initiatives included revamping the exploratory model to enhance student opportunity and access to programs and redesigning curriculum accommodations. Professional development aimed at fostering inclusive and effective instructional strategies was emphasized, with plans to complete these initiatives by June 2025.
This partnership is intended to be monitored with updates expected in the spring. Additionally, culturally responsive and inclusive lessons were emphasized.
The committee discussed the expansion of professional development focused on data-driven differentiated and culturally responsive teaching practices to close achievement gaps. Reports from recent conferences were presented, aligning with district goals to advance operational efficiencies and educational practices.
The meeting also addressed the development of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) principles, with educators collaborating with consultants to produce a report expected to be shared with staff in the coming months. The increase in Cooperative Education placements, rising by 7% this year, was noted, emphasizing the district’s success in expanding partnerships with employers.
Efforts to enhance family engagement were discussed, particularly through the work of a newly appointed community specialist, Maria, who has improved operations and communications with families. The superintendent commended her contributions, noting positive feedback from staff members. Additionally, student council updates included plans for spring events and participation in leadership conferences.
The meeting concluded with discussions on policies and new appointments. The committee adopted a religious accommodation policy, emphasizing its importance in maintaining equity within the district. The appointment of an assistant treasurer was also addressed.
