- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Hackensack City Council meeting, allegations of racial misconduct against Councilman Leonardo Battaglia dominated public comments, with community members demanding accountability and the council addressing the broader implications of the incident. The meeting also covered an array of other topics, including a proposed video security camera registry ordinance and updates on local infrastructure projects.
The meeting took a serious turn when multiple speakers addressed allegations involving Councilman Leonardo Battaglia and his actions during a series of incidents with the Royals Club, a local sports team. Sean Holder, a coach with the Royals Club, accused Battaglia of attempting to remove the team from a field where they were legally practicing, leading to police intervention. Holder recounted another incident where Battaglia allegedly followed the team to another practice location, culminating in further police involvement. During a high school soccer game on September 16, Battaglia was accused of making derogatory and racially charged remarks towards Holder and his players. Holder expressed his belief that these actions were racially motivated and called for the council to condemn such behavior.
Supportive accounts followed, including that of Nelissa Zerella, who witnessed Battaglia making derogatory comments in Spanish during the same soccer game. Zerella confronted Battaglia, expressing disbelief that an elected official would make such remarks. Dr. Suzanne Mullings from the Bergen County Black Caucus echoed the seriousness of these accusations, urging the council to seek an apology on behalf of Holder and the affected parties. The public outcry was further amplified by other speakers who criticized Battaglia’s behavior and called for decisive action from the council to uphold community values and integrity.
Amidst these allegations, the council addressed accusations of broader racial bias within its ranks. The Deputy Mayor clarified a phone call received from another council member, which suggested that the entire council would be labeled as racist. The Deputy Mayor expressed concern over such accusations, emphasizing that the issue should focus on individual actions rather than implicating the whole council.
The meeting’s atmosphere was charged as the community expressed dissatisfaction with how the council handled the allegations. Public concerns extended to educational issues, with residents criticizing the council’s lack of collaboration with the Board of Education in addressing overcrowded schools. Residents voiced frustration over inadequate school facilities and criticized the allocation of funds for community events.
The council also discussed a proposed ordinance for a private outdoor video security camera registry. This proposal reflects the city’s ongoing efforts to leverage technology in supporting law enforcement and public safety initiatives.
In addition, updates on infrastructure projects were provided, including progress on combined sewer separation initiatives and the nearing completion of the Polyfly Park drainage project. The city engineer reported that sewer installations in the Anderson Street drainage area are expected to conclude by the end of the month, with final restoration by November’s end. Other projects, such as the East Kennedy Pump Station generator and the Green Street post-flood hazard mitigation project, were also mentioned.
The meeting concluded with the adoption of several resolutions and ordinances, including amendments to city code regarding parking regulations, the introduction of a new handicap parking space, and the establishment of a private outdoor video surveillance camera register.
