Hackensack City Council Renames Intersection in Honor of Late Coach Gordon Scooter Whiting
- Meeting Overview:
The Hackensack City Council voted to rename the intersection of Beach and Second Street to “Gordon Scooter Whiting Way,” in memory of Whiting’s impactful contributions to Hackensack as an athletic director, coach, and assistant principal. The meeting also focused on public safety concerns and environmental initiatives.
The council meeting began with the passage of a resolution to rename the intersection as “Gordon Scooter Whiting Way,” in honor of Whiting, who passed away in May 2026 shortly after retiring. Whiting was celebrated for his dedication to the community. His influence extended beyond sports, as he played a role in the academic community as an assistant principal. The resolution was unanimously supported by council members, and Whiting’s wife, Dr. Joy Whiting, expressed her gratitude, emphasizing the lasting impact of her husband’s legacy on the community. She announced an event at the Hackensack Sports Center, where scholarships in his name would be awarded.
In addition to Whiting, several Hackensack High School students and athletes were recognized for their achievements. Sylvia Brown was honored for her Girl Scout Gold Award project, which involved creating a network of mini food pantries.
The council also addressed pressing community issues. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to a presentation by the Hackensack Environmental Justice Alliance (HEJA) regarding the Hackensack Green Infrastructure Plan. This initiative aims to mitigate flooding and improve environmental conditions through sustainable practices. HEJA representatives outlined the need for enhanced river access and proposed pathways along the Hackensack River, garnering substantial interest from residents.
The meeting further included discussions on local safety improvements. Updates were provided on pedestrian crossing signs and traffic regulations, addressing concerns raised by residents in previous sessions. The city manager reported on maintenance efforts, including new play equipment for Palaski Park and pedestrian safety enhancements around Carver Park. However, some residents expressed dissatisfaction with parking enforcement and called for more considerate regulations.
Public comments shed light on additional community concerns. Residents voiced frustrations over the cancellation of the summer basketball league, previously subsidized by the city. The program was primarily for out-of-town teams, which led to a decision against using taxpayer funds for referee fees. Despite the city’s offer to provide facilities at a reduced fee, the program organizers chose to cancel it, a decision clarified by city officials.
Department of Public Works (DPW) employees spoke about workplace conditions, low wages, and lack of advancement opportunities. They called for the council’s support in negotiating better labor contracts. The mayor acknowledged these systemic issues and expressed a commitment to addressing them with the city manager.
The meeting concluded with acknowledgments of the community’s resilience in the face of a recent severe storm. The mayor praised first responders and community members for their recovery efforts. City officials encouraged residents to participate in upcoming community events.
