- Meeting Overview:
The Hackensack School Board meeting was marked by discussions over personnel decisions, a debate on bilingual education, and a showcase of student-led initiatives.
The most notable issue revolved around the tabling of a decision to hire a legal and labor relations specialist. The board’s discussion revealed a division on whether this position, previously approved and scheduled to begin on December 1, should be tabled. A tie vote resulted in the decision being delayed, prompting frustration among some board members. They argued that the proposed salary was a fiscally responsible move compared to past legal expenses incurred by the district. The debate also touched upon the superintendent’s authority, with some members asserting that the board was overstepping its bounds and stifling necessary district functions.
Further complicating the meeting were discussions about bilingual education services, particularly for students relying on Spanish-language resources. A parent voiced concerns that her niece, an eighth-grader, had been without a bilingual teacher since September, relying instead on Google Translate for class materials. This situation, she argued, was inadequate preparation for high school. A multilingual director clarified that while the HMH literature program is not designed as a bilingual program, it provides many resources in Spanish. They assured attendees that a multilingual coach was involved in lesson planning, despite the absence of a bilingual teacher, and that the district was committed to addressing these concerns.
The superintendent echoed the need for improvements in bilingual education and assured that the district would follow up on the issues raised during the meeting. The emphasis on ensuring appropriate educational support for bilingual students was a recurring theme, with commitments made to enhance resources and teacher availability.
The meeting also celebrated the achievements of student clubs and their contributions to school life and the broader community. The culinary program was notably recognized for its community outreach efforts, including feeding senior citizens and preparing meals for underprivileged families. Their involvement in Hispanic Heritage Month, where they prepared Latin American dishes for over 1,300 students, was particularly highlighted. The Latin American Student Association (LASSA) was another group presented, with students promoting Hispanic American culture through various events and community service.
In addition to these presentations, a series of cultural celebrations were acknowledged, including Diwali. The superintendent praised the active participation of families in PTA meetings.
However, the meeting was not without its controversies. A notable point of contention was the allegation of secret negotiations between board members and the city council for political gain. The board president denied these claims, stating that all interactions were conducted openly and with proper authorization. The situation highlighted existing tensions within the board, with calls for a return to professionalism and a focus on educational goals over political disputes.
