- Meeting Overview:
During a recent Haddon Heights Borough Council meeting, residents voiced concerns about the borough’s leaf collection schedule and road safety, particularly on White Horse Pike and local streets. The meeting also included updates on infrastructure projects and the unanimous adoption of several ordinances.
A major topic of discussion centered around the borough’s leaf collection process. Several residents expressed frustration over the inconsistent scheduling and communication regarding leaf pickup. This inconsistency led to leaves accumulating on streets, creating potential hazards for pedestrians and drivers alike. Residents suggested the need for a structured schedule, akin to garbage collection, to mitigate these issues.
Leaf collection was not the only concern. Road safety, particularly on the state-controlled White Horse Pike, was another issue. A resident pointed out the dangers posed to students crossing this busy road, especially at poorly illuminated crosswalks like the one at High Street. A recent incident where a student was struck by a vehicle further underscored the urgency of these safety concerns. The council acknowledged these issues and mentioned the state’s plan to resurface White Horse Pike in 2026, which would include improvements to crosswalks, potentially adding flashing lights and high-visibility markings.
Residents also raised safety concerns on local roads, particularly regarding speeding and the need for better traffic control measures. One resident from Maple Street described the hazardous conditions due to speeding vehicles and the disregard for stop signs, especially near a school. The suggestion of installing four-way stop signs and removable speed bumps was made to curb these issues. This resident’s concerns were compounded by ongoing roadwork, which left streets in dangerous conditions due to unfilled holes and unattended cones. The council recognized the need to address these safety hazards and acknowledged jurisdictional complexities that could affect the implementation of new traffic measures.
The council meeting also covered several administrative and legislative matters. A report from the borough engineer announced a successful $269,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation Municipal Aid Grant, designated for improvements on St. Martin and Windfield. The council expressed satisfaction with securing one of the larger grants in the county area, which would support significant infrastructure enhancements.
The council unanimously adopted bond ordinances 2024-1559 and 2024-1560, authorizing funds for capital improvements and sanitary sewer system upgrades, respectively. Public hearings for these ordinances saw no objections, allowing for smooth passage. New business introduced included ordinance 2024-1563 for long-term tax exemptions and ordinance 2024-1564, aimed at amending police department provisions, both set for public hearings and final adoption in December.
In addition, resolutions concerning animal control services, shelter agreements, and budget appropriation transfers were presented and collectively approved.
The public comment session provided further insight into community concerns, with residents emphasizing the need for improved municipal services and communication. The dialogue highlighted a broader desire for enhanced safety measures and efficient service delivery.
