- Meeting Overview:
The Haddon Heights Borough Council addressed a series of issues critical to the community in their recent meeting, ranging from parking regulations to public events. The council’s agenda included the potential reorganization of parking spaces, support for community events, local infrastructure improvements, and the enforcement of regulations on county roads.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on the potential addition or relocation of 15-minute parking spaces in the 500 block of Station Avenue. This proposal stemmed from feedback provided by local businesses and was discussed in the context of improving customer access. The enforcement of parking regulations was also deliberated, including the idea of designating 15-minute spaces for certain hours of the day to maximize their utility. The chief of police contributed suggestions for possible locations, notably in front of a recording studio and along East Atlantic Avenue. To alleviate parking congestion, the addition of signs directing to further parking options on Atlantic Avenue was also proposed. Ultimately, the council agreed to delegate the matter to a specific council member, who would collaborate with the Department of Public Works and local business proprietors to finalize the parking changes.
The council acknowledged the success of Heights Grow’s garden tour fundraiser, which supported the community library and civic events. The need for volunteers for the upcoming Fourth of July parade was also noted. Commendations were extended to the Safe Routes to School committee for organizing a Bike Rodeo and to the Civic Events committee for their efforts in planning Memorial Day and Fourth of July celebrations. The council touched upon infrastructure, specifically the resurfacing of Garden Street and other projects scheduled for the summer. Public Safety reports were presented, highlighting the police department’s monthly statistics for May 2024 and the graduation of K9 Luna from the K9 Academy. Fire department statistics for the same month were reviewed as well.
The council then transitioned to administrative resolutions, including the authorization for the tax collector to issue and mail estimated third-quarter tax bills, the procurement of heavy equipment for Public Works, and the approval of raffle licenses for St. Rose of Lima parish’s annual Christmas Bazaar. A resident’s concerns surfaced during the public comment section, touching on parking difficulties on Long Station and speeding issues on Devon Avenue. The council responded with intentions to conduct a traffic study and to enhance enforcement in the affected areas.
Another resident’s grievance regarding permit fees and processes for county roads was aired, describing a lack of response from a county official and a sense of harassment and hindrance in his work. The mayor addressed the concerns by discussing the possibility of a waiver for residents applying for permits and the enforcement of rules for tree services operating without adherence to regulations. The resident’s contact information was promised to be conveyed to the county official for further action.
In addition to the practical matters, the council celebrated community efforts and contributions to public events. Appreciation was expressed to Councilwoman Harron and volunteers for their dedication to Memorial Day and Fourth of July services, as well as to the Sons of Italy Lodge and the VFW for their support. Anticipation was voiced for the upcoming Cam County summer concert series at the Dell.
