- Meeting Overview:
The Hainesport Town Council meeting on September 10, 2024, featured discussions and decisions, including the adoption of ordinances on stormwater control and tree removal, the approval of several resolutions, and updates on community projects and events.
The council’s most notable action was the unanimous adoption of ordinance 2024-12, focusing on stormwater control for major developments. This ordinance aims to address ongoing issues with the township’s stormwater management system, particularly in areas susceptible to flooding and recurrent damage. The public hearing for this ordinance saw no comments from residents, allowing for a swift and unanimous adoption. The council emphasized the importance of this measure in safeguarding community properties and ensuring efficient water flow during heavy rains.
Similarly, ordinance 2024-13, which pertains to tree removal and replacement to mitigate stormwater runoff, was also adopted without public opposition. This ordinance aims to balance environmental preservation with practical measures to control stormwater.
Another topic was the announcement of a 17.2% increase in health insurance rates for the local government employer group for 2025. This increase continues a troubling trend over the past several years, prompting discussions about exploring alternative health insurance options. The township is limited in its ability to change plans frequently, as regulations allow changes only every two years. The administrator highlighted that many municipalities are leaving the state health benefits plan due to these rising costs, which disproportionately affect local government employees compared to state employees and school districts.
The council also addressed a resolution concerning Bankr Lane, which involved a change order that increased the cost for repairs to a stormwater pipe. The total amended contract amount rose to $9,465. The council underscored the township’s responsibility in maintaining storm drains, noting the persistent problems with the infrastructure.
The meeting included several other important resolutions and appointments. The council approved the resignation of H. Crile from the Joint Land Use Board, recognizing his 17 years of service, including seven as chairperson. Jennifer Curus was appointed as Deputy Clerk, and John Fred Parker III was appointed as a school crossing guard, both appointments passing smoothly.
Resolution 2024-141 recognized the mayor’s appointment of a Class 4 member and an alternate to the Joint Land Use Board. Questions were raised about the districts represented by the new appointees, with the mayor confirming that one appointee was from District 4 and another from District 3. This discussion highlighted the importance of diversifying representation within the council.
The council also authorized the sale of surplus property to the Borough of Medford Lakes for $1. This decision was made to facilitate the transfer of surplus items to another municipality in need, and it elicited lighthearted comments about the nominal sale price.
During the meeting, the administrator provided updates on the progress of construction at the municipal and Chase Park courts. Work on the tennis courts and the basketball court at Chase Park had begun, with an expectation of completion within 30 days, contingent on the timely ordering of materials.
Community events and initiatives were also discussed, including an upcoming movie night in the park and a spaghetti dinner fundraiser hosted by the Ladies Auxiliary. Members expressed enthusiasm for the Mayor’s Wellness and Community Day on September 28, which will feature activities such as classic cars, live entertainment, food trucks, and health-related information.
The council recognized the contributions of former mayor Charlie Gray, who passed away at 94. His six years of service to the township, including a term as mayor in 1985, were fondly remembered, and condolences were extended to his family.
A noteworthy community initiative was the recent third annual free market organized by the Faith Assembly Church, which provided essential items to numerous community members. This event illustrated the impact of local volunteerism and the importance of community support.
Finally, the council moved to file a grant application for a mental health initiative as part of the Mayor’s Wellness campaign, with authorization granted following a motion. The meeting concluded with the approval of bills and a transition into executive session to discuss pending matters.
