Haledon School Board Celebrates Service Milestones and Tackles Preschool Expansion Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Haledon School Board recognized the service of its members and addressed issues surrounding preschool expansion.
The meeting began with a recognition of Liesl Iza and Rafael Martinez for their dedication to the board and the community. Iza, concluding her tenure, reflected on her seven years of service, including her leadership role during the COVID-19 pandemic and her efforts in negotiating a fair contract with the teachers’ union. Martinez, with six years on the board, was commended for his contributions to the school’s growth.
Chief School Administrator Christopher Wacha expressed gratitude for the courage required to serve on the board and recognized the positive changes achieved, such as increased preschool enrollment and the development of inclusive playgrounds. Two educators were celebrated for their contributions: Miss Nton, teacher of the year, and Miss Chrissy Sarissian, educational service provider of the year. Their dedication to literacy support and student advocacy was highlighted, with Wacha emphasizing the rigorous selection process for these honors.
A significant portion of the meeting focused on the preschool expansion. This growth was attributed to the board’s advocacy and state initiatives encouraging enrollment. However, the expansion has led to a new challenge: a state requirement for at least ten general education spots for three-year-olds, resulting in a lottery system due to high demand.
The board also discussed staffing challenges, particularly the difficulty in filling short-term maternity leave positions. Plans to address these issues include participation in a job fair at Montclair State University, which has been a fruitful recruitment avenue in the past.
Budgetary concerns were another focal point, with the board facing a substantial reduction in state and federal funding. Despite these challenges, the board has managed to avoid layoffs and is developing multiple budget scenarios to prepare for potential fluctuations in state aid. Business Administrator Lameka Augustin reported on financial strategies, including the allocation of federal carryover funds to cover salary costs and revisions to facility rental policies to ensure competitive pricing. The board aims to finalize the budget by January, providing a clear direction for addressing any deficits once state aid figures are released in February.
This sentiment was echoed by Amanda Pilowski, president of the Hen Education Association, who appreciated the board’s support and encouraged members to visit classrooms to observe the educational environment firsthand.
Community member Hilton Gonzalez spoke about the school’s role as the heart of the community, highlighting the positive atmosphere created by teachers and staff. He extended holiday wishes to all.
