- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Haledon School Board meeting, discussions centered on expanding pre-K capacity through a new school addition and honoring an eighth-grade student who passed away. Other topics included safety measures at school events, the integration of the arts into the STEM curriculum, and the district’s approach to public relations and social media.
This was made possible by a new addition to the school building, which had already been in use by pre-K classes. The expansion effectively eliminated a long-standing waiting list for preschool enrollment, allowing more families to access early childhood education. Board members expressed their gratitude towards the chief school administrator, business administrator, and facilities director for their leadership in this project. They also acknowledged the architects, construction company, teachers, staff, and community members whose collaboration made the project possible. The achievement was celebrated at a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony, described as a notable milestone for the district.
In a somber yet important part of the meeting, the board discussed plans to honor Jelle Winter, an eighth-grade student who had recently passed away. The chief school administrator shared their attendance at Jelle’s memorial service, indicating that the district plans to commemorate Jelle in a manner similar to previous student memorials, with input from the family being prioritized.
Safety concerns at school events were also addressed following an incident at a holiday concert where a student fell from risers. The student was unharmed, but the chief school administrator stressed the importance of enhancing safety measures, such as installing built-in back guard rails on risers to prevent future accidents. The board was also informed of a previous unreported incident during a practice session, prompting a review of communication protocols among staff to ensure better incident reporting and preventive measures.
The board further discussed the transition from the STEM curriculum to a STEAM approach, incorporating the arts alongside science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This shift was initiated by a passionate language arts teacher who started a robotics club and advocated for the inclusion of arts in the curriculum. However, the teacher has since stepped back. Board members discussed the potential benefits of broadening the curriculum to attract more applicants and avoid relying on substitutes, as had been necessary in past situations.
A presentation titled “Harnessing the Power of Public Relations, Social Media, and Technology” was given at a recent county meeting and attended by some board members. Dr. Janine Dut, the superintendent of schools in North Warren Regional, emphasized the importance of districts controlling their narrative through social media and other communication tools. She advised board members to be cautious about their posts concerning the district while encouraging them to share positive news about school events. Dr. Dut also discussed the relevance of artificial intelligence in education, urging the board to explore its benefits while being mindful of challenges related to student work and academic integrity.
The meeting also included updates on ongoing facility improvements, such as a review of bathroom stalls during the winter break to ensure they are in good working condition. Additionally, third-grade student Francesca D Stepan was recognized for winning third place in a county poster contest, with an award ceremony planned to honor her achievement.
In terms of finance, the board approved an annual safety grant, which provided reimbursement for safety supplies previously purchased. A resolution regarding consulting services for gas and electricity was also discussed, aimed at securing favorable pricing through collective bidding. Monthly finance reports underscored the importance of maintaining financial oversight and accountability within the district.
Public comments were invited on state school funding laws, with in-person hearings scheduled in various New Jersey locations. Members of the public were encouraged to participate and express their views. The board was also reminded of upcoming mandatory training webinars and activities, with a note to check emails for further information.
