Initially launched in 2019 with eight courses and around 80 members, the program has since expanded to offer 73 courses for the upcoming fall semester. Dr. Reid emphasized the program’s focus on accessibility, with a registration fee of $95 per semester, allowing participants to enroll in up to seven courses. Scholarships are available, and the program does not require extensive personal disclosures for applicants, making it accessible to those on fixed incomes.

The course offerings span a variety of disciplines, including physics, literature, and current events, with popular classes in political discussions and creative arts like ballet and watercolor painting. Participation is flexible, with options for online and in-person classes at various locations, including the university campus, senior centers, and libraries. Online classes are recorded, enabling students to revisit sessions or catch up on missed content. Dr. Reid encouraged attendees to share information about the program, particularly with potential new members who could benefit from the scholarships offered.

One of the meeting highlights was the announcement of the Senior College’s international travel program, which grew out of a popular course on Irish literature. The program has organized trips to Ireland and Scotland and announced an upcoming trip to France and Switzerland in May. These trips offer participants a chance to engage with the culture and history they study, providing enriching experiences that include meeting authors and exploring historical sites.

In addition to the educational offerings, the Senior College provides several benefits to its members, such as access to a student ID, parking stickers, and the university’s fitness center. Members also enjoy library services and a subscription to the New York Times app, adding substantial value to their participation in the program. Member-driven events, like visits to a Buddhist temple and the Fuller Craft Museum, offer further opportunities for socialization and cultural engagement.

The meeting also addressed the importance of cyber security initiatives led by Bridgewater State University’s cyber range. An overview of the facility was provided, highlighting its role in training local governments and businesses to enhance their cyber security measures. The cyber range features advanced technology and is designed to simulate real-world cyber threats, addressing the multi-billion dollar threat posed to businesses. The director of the cyber range emphasized the necessity of these training programs, particularly in light of recent incidents, such as a town losing $200,000 to a scam.
