Hamilton School Board Applauds Community Support Amid New Leadership and Safety Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Hamilton Township School Board meeting focused on community collaboration, the election of new leadership, and initiatives to improve student safety and engagement.
One of a notable topics was the announcement of the election results and subsequent leadership appointments. Ashley Anne Dirks, Mona McQueen, Cheryl Serino, and Nancy Bar were elected to three-year terms, with Bar also filling a one-year unexpired term. After taking their oaths, Nancy Bar was unanimously elected as the board president. Following her election, Bar expressed gratitude and assumed leadership of the meeting. For the vice president position, Dr. Serino and Mrs. Anker were nominated, with Mrs. Anker ultimately elected following a vote that saw one dissenting voice. This change in leadership is anticipated to steer the board’s future decisions, shaping the educational landscape in Hamilton Township.
Another highlight was the “Love Tree” initiative, a collaborative effort between the school district and Hamilton Cares. Samantha Wilson, Interim Supervisor of Pupil Services, reported that over 200 students were supported this year. The initiative, which began during the pandemic, has grown substantially, now involving a storefront where parents can select gifts with dignity. This year, the community’s efforts allowed the program to serve 607 children. Amy Hassa, a community member involved in the initiative, emphasized the importance of maintaining anonymity for families receiving support. The initiative’s success was attributed to the support of local businesses and community members.
Safety and behavioral trends within the schools were also discussed in detail. Mrs. Wilson presented a report on the Student Safety Data Support System, revealing a decrease in incidents from 259 in 2022 to 130 in the current year. While incidents of violence and vandalism declined, an increase in other incidents leading to removal was noted. To address these trends, the board is focusing on proactive measures, such as staff training in de-escalation techniques and positive reinforcement strategies. The board emphasized the importance of monitoring disciplinary actions to address disparities and implement restorative practices. Specific schools have adopted unique approaches, such as PBIS supports at Hess and recognition programs at Davies.
Community engagement was further highlighted during the meeting, with recognition of student and staff achievements. Carter Ross was acknowledged as the reading summer challenge winner, and Mrs. Langley was celebrated as the Staff of the Month for December. The festive atmosphere, complete with Santa and Mrs. Claus, underscored the celebratory mood. The student council from William Davies Middle School shared updates on recent events, including a winter choir and band concert, a coat drive, and a schoolwide basketball showdown. They also announced upcoming events.
In the public comment section, a community member shared concerns about the impact of agenda changes on district staff, emphasizing the need for thoughtful consideration of how changes affect staff morale and well-being. A teacher voiced concerns about recent payroll practices, noting confusion and frustration over taxation of financial rewards and lack of clear communication from the payroll department. Another community member introduced an initiative from Sustainable Jersey for Schools, focusing on food service and cafeteria waste reduction, highlighting opportunities for the district to engage in a food waste audit.
The meeting concluded with board discussions on personnel and finance matters, including a motion to contract an HVAC contractor to install damaged units. This installation is expected to take place after school hours and during the Easter break.
