- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Hamilton School Board meeting, focus was placed on the district’s achievements in enhancing student safety and a successful community-driven holiday giving program.
A key highlight of the meeting was the detailed report on the district’s substantial investment in student safety technology. The board reviewed a comprehensive expansion of security measures, which included an increase in surveillance cameras from 39 to approximately 500 over the past five years. The installation of advanced Halo devices in restrooms was also discussed, which are designed to detect safety concerns such as smoke and distress calls. These improvements were made possible through a combination of federal grants and a bond referendum. The effectiveness of these measures was illustrated by an incident where a teacher utilized a panic button, resulting in an immediate lockdown that impressed local law enforcement with the quick response from both students and staff.
In addition to technological enhancements, the board emphasized the importance of restorative practices training for staff, aimed at building positive relationships with students and constructively addressing behavioral issues. A report on the School Safety Data System (SSDS) and the Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying (HIB) figures for the 2024-2025 period showed a promising decrease in incidents. There were only 96 incidents leading to removal and 11 confirmed cases of harassment. The improvement was attributed to the diligent efforts of the school administration and staff.
Another aspect of the meeting revolved around a community-driven holiday initiative. A representative from William Davies Middle School expressed gratitude to the board for their support, which has been instrumental in creating a positive environment for students. A special mention was made of Mr. Williams and community members who contributed to the annual Giving Tree initiative. This effort provided holiday cheer and presents to families in need, fostering a spirit of generosity and community support. In collaboration with Hamilton Cares, 400 students received Christmas gifts, facilitated by the community education department and supported by the National Honor Society, which helped wrap the presents and create a shopping experience for parents.
The meeting also included recognition of school staff and students for their achievements and contributions. The board acknowledged the winner of the summer reading challenge, Colton Ross, and December’s staff of the month, Mrs. Steelman, for her dedication and positive impact on students and colleagues. Further commendations were given to the first-grade team for their contributions. These recognitions were met with applause, emphasizing the board’s appreciation for the efforts and accomplishments within the school community.
In financial matters, the board reviewed the audit findings presented by Ms. Carol Russ from Forge Scott Associates. The audit highlighted the district’s stable financial health, with a fund balance of approximately $15 million, though much of it was earmarked for specific purposes. The food service program ended the year in profit, reflecting effective cost management. However, community education saw a decline in profit, and the Kids Club experienced a loss, prompting discussions on addressing these challenges.
Student engagement and extracurricular achievements were also celebrated. The student council’s participation in a leadership conference at TC NJ was noted, along with their upcoming food drive to support the Main Street Food Pantry. In music, eighth-grade choir student Jacob Buros was set to perform with the All South Jersey Junior High Choir, and seven band students auditioned for the All South Jersey Junior High Band. These activities highlighted the diverse opportunities available to students and their active involvement in school life.
