Hamilton School Board Meeting Highlights: Toy Donations, Audit Findings, and Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Hamilton Township Board of Education meeting, discussions included a successful toy donation initiative with Hamilton Cares, the presentation of the annual audit with minor findings, and several community engagement efforts.
The meeting spotlighted a heartwarming collaboration with Hamilton Cares, resulting in the donation of hundreds of toys for families in need during the holiday season. The initiative transformed a classroom into a makeshift toy store, where families could “shop for free,” ensuring children could enjoy a festive Christmas. The success of the event was attributed to the concerted efforts of the National Junior Honor Society members and local community volunteers. Board members expressed their gratitude for the community’s generous involvement, highlighting the spirit of giving and support that characterizes the district.
The annual audit report, presented by Carol Russ from Ford Scott Associates, was another focal point of the meeting. Russ detailed that this year’s audit found no issues within the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR), though a minor management report highlighted a concern within the community education program. The issue involved insufficient documentation accompanying checks and a lack of reconciliation controls between departments. Despite this, the district saw a budgetary fund balance increase of approximately $600,000, partly due to increased state aid. Russ noted that while fixed costs like salaries and maintenance rose, other expenses such as supplies were controlled effectively. The district’s budgetary fund balance was approximately $15 million, with $4 million in reserves. Improvements were also seen in the food service department, which generated excess cash. A recommendation was made to notify the state of this surplus and outline a plan for its use. Additionally, the community education program showed significant recovery.
In the realm of community recognition, staff members and students were commended for their achievements. Mrs. Bryant announced Daniel Percy, a second grader, as the winner of the December reading challenge, praising his diligence and reading skills. Miss Brenda was highlighted as the staff member of the month for November, recognized for her dedication and caring relationships with students. Mr. Rivera, another staff member, received accolades for her commitment to student welfare and proactive communication with staff.
The student council representative provided updates on recent and upcoming events, noting the success of the eighth-grade flag football tournament and the participation of Davies Band and Choir in a town tree-lighting ceremony. Upcoming events included a winter concert, a coat drive for local families, and themed spirit days. Additionally, select eighth graders would have an educational visit to Oakrest High School to explore culinary and art programs, and the school would host a basketball showdown against Hamilton Middle School.
Adjustmentsttention was also given to community engagement and employee appreciation initiatives. The meeting celebrated “Staff’s Feast Fridays,” a program aimed at recognizing the hard work of employees and fostering a sense of community within the school. The PTA movie night was highlighted as an example of strong family-school partnerships, and the parent conference night was praised for facilitating meaningful connections between parents and teachers regarding student progress.
During the meeting, Board President Nancy Bar honored Mrs. Beverly Perto for her four years of service, acknowledging her advocacy for equity and high-quality education. A copy of the book Wonder was designated for the Hess library in her honor.
Committee reports provided further insights into district operations. The Personnel and Policy Committee discussed policy changes relating to pediculosis (head lice) and the creation of a new secretarial position for community education. The Finance and Operations Committee reviewed the audit report and discussed the necessity for a new community education position, the Shainer addition project, and upgrades to the Hess fire system. Meanwhile, the Curriculum Committee reported on changes mandated by the Department of Education regarding universal student screening processes and technology enhancements for the following year.
Public comments were minimal, but Jennifer Holmstrom, a district employee, expressed gratitude for community support during “PJ Day for CHOP,” which raised over $2,000 for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Holmstrom praised the collective effort, emphasizing the importance of giving back during the holiday season.
