Hamilton Town Council Advances Affordable Housing Initiatives Amid Community Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Hamilton Town Council, advancements were made concerning affordable housing development and land use legislation, including the unanimous approval of several ordinances relating to these topics. The council also addressed community concerns about communication and ongoing environmental cleanup efforts, while expressing gratitude for the public works department’s handling of recent snowstorms.
The council began by focusing on critical amendments to land development legislation, specifically targeting affordable housing development fees. Ordinance 126-009 was swiftly moved and unanimously passed, replacing Chapter 550, Section 167 with a new version to address affordable housing development fees. This was closely followed by the successful introduction and approval of Ordinance 126-010, which also repealed and replaced Chapter 550, Section 168, focusing on affordable housing.
Further supporting these amendments, the council discussed Resolution 126-117, referring the proposed changes to the code relating to land use legislation to the Hamilton Township Planning Board for review. The resolution was passed without any questions or comments.
Public concerns were raised by resident John Slanic regarding the effectiveness of meeting notifications, pointing to an unusually low attendance. The council acknowledged efforts made via social media but recognized that not all residents might have received the updates. Slanic also brought up the “Good Old Rubber” site, known for its environmental issues. He was informed that a scheduled cleanup was set to begin soon, pending favorable weather conditions, with the hazardous materials, including presumed asbestos, already being removed. The cleanup is expected to take roughly eight weeks.
On a related note, another resident queried about a construction project on Cruiser Road, speculating about its purpose. The council confirmed that the site would host various-sized storage units, including climate-controlled options, thereby providing additional storage solutions for the community.
The council also took time to commend the public works department for their dedication in managing recent snowstorms, which posed significant challenges. Council members highlighted the effectiveness of snow removal efforts, noting the visible improvements in clearing walkways and streets, which helped maintain community accessibility. The teamwork between public works employees and subcontractors was recognized as pivotal in handling the impact of the storms, described by council members as historically significant. Some members remarked on the spirited community response, where neighbors aided each other during the adverse weather conditions.
In addition, the council discussed a partnership with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP).
