Hamilton Town Council Advances Solar Project and Strengthens Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
During the latest meeting of the Hamilton Town Council, strides were made in advancing the township’s solar energy project, alongside a series of appointments and community initiatives. The council discussed the ongoing landfill closure project, which includes a solar development component, and addressed various committee and board appointments for the coming year.
The landfill remediation and solar energy project emerged as a focal point of the meeting. The council deliberated on the project’s progress, emphasizing the importance of environmental compliance and community benefits. The township had initially resisted the inclusion of Lot 15 in the project area but ultimately agreed to maintain a necessary corridor for wildlife. This compliance paved the way for constructing essential basins for landfill closure. Following approvals from the Pinelands Commission and the Department of Environmental Protection, the project is anticipated to wrap up construction by early next year.
A crucial aspect of this project is the integration of solar development, which aims to harness renewable energy while ensuring the landfill’s proper closure. The project includes interconnection points for two community solar projects, projected to generate approximately seven and a half megawatts of energy. This initiative is expected to offer a 20% savings on monthly bills for around 1,200 households, with the township planning meetings to guide residents through the sign-up process. Concerns about interconnection costs and documentation accuracy were addressed.
In addition to the solar initiative, the council also focused on appointments to various township committees and boards. The swearing-in of Carl Pitale and Dr. Thelma Witherspoon as township committee members marked a notable moment. Subsequent elections saw Pitale appointed as the permanent chairperson for 2026, with Richard Cheek taking on the role of deputy chairperson.
The council proceeded with a comprehensive series of appointments for professional roles in 2026. Ken Warren was confirmed as the township solicitor, while other key positions, such as township auditor and engineer, were filled with unanimous support. The council also addressed vacancies in various advisory boards, with a notable decision to leave some positions open due to a lack of applicants.
Public comments highlighted a sense of gratitude and optimism among council members and residents alike. The mayor acknowledged the role of volunteers and emphasized the importance of budget transparency and collaboration among committee members to tackle future challenges.
The council also introduced ordinances concerning municipal budget appropriation limits and a ground lease with HIP Renewal LLC. These measures aim to provide financial flexibility and support the ongoing landfill and solar project. Additionally, the council approved resolutions for interlocal services agreements and professional property appraiser contracts, furthering the township’s operational efficiency.
