- Meeting Overview:
In a move to curb environmental violations, the Hamilton Township Committee adopted ordinance 2063-2024, significantly amending the penalties for illegal dumping. This measure was a highlight of the recent committee meeting, which also included the approval of new business registrations, the appointment of officials, and discussions on local development and community projects.
The ordinance, which now imposes stricter penalties for illegal dumping in the township, was met with support from community members, including Fred Akres from the Great Harbor River Council. Akres’ endorsement of the ordinance came with an inquiry about its enforcement on private properties, sparking a conversation among committee members.
In line with the township’s development agenda, the committee approved the sale of various lots within Hamilton, offering adjacent property owners the right of first refusal to purchase these lands. This decision is part of a broader initiative to manage the township’s growth and provide opportunities for current residents to expand their property holdings.
Moreover, the committee granted a contract to Richard Grub and Associates for an intensive level survey of historic resources, reflecting Hamilton’s dedication to preserving its heritage while accommodating modern development. These actions demonstrate the committee’s balanced approach to growth, respecting the past while preparing for the future.
The meeting also saw Warren Leonard’s nomination and subsequent approval as the Township Solicitor for 2024. The resolution to rescind the appointment of an alternate conflict solicitor passed, followed by the approval of Bill Blay as the new alternate solicitor.
Among the updates and reports from council members at the Hamilton Town Council meeting, the engineer confirmed that construction projects were proceeding as planned. Dr. Thelma Witherspoon announced her participation in upcoming economic alliance and business events.
Council members Richard Cheek and Robert Laws extended their thanks to the Public Works Department for their exceptional service during recent adverse weather conditions. Cheek noted the progress on the Leapy Field project, while Laws expressed optimism about new business ventures in the township, signaling a thriving local economy.
Mayor Art Schenker inquired about the projected completion date for the Leapy Field project, which is expected to be substantially finished by the end of April. The project’s timely completion is anticipated to bring new recreational opportunities to the township’s residents.
The Public Works Department received further commendation for their commitment, and the council took a moment to honor the memory of the late Bill Gato, recognizing his contributions to the community.
In matters concerning education, Dr. Nelson from the school board sought the council’s support for a resolution to secure funds for renovating Duerson, a school facility. He also reported recent school delays caused by inclement weather, emphasizing the interconnectedness of community services and the importance of maintaining strong support between the township and the school board.
The meeting concluded with Fred Akres of the Gravelly Run Council discussing the importance of open space preservation.
