Hamilton-Wenham School Committee Discusses Strategic Plan and Technology Integration
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School Committee focused on strategic planning and the integration of technology in education, alongside approving significant donations for school projects. The committee discussed a five-year strategic plan involving community collaboration and addressed concerns about technology use in classrooms, particularly for younger students.
The strategic planning process, which involved input from 29 community members over three and a half months, aims to drive continuous improvement within the district. The plan outlines a mission to inspire continuous learning and features a “portrait of a learner” that defines essential competencies such as adaptability, perseverance, empathy, lifelong learning, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. Superintendent Eric Tracy emphasized the importance of this plan being a living document, adaptable to ongoing feedback and progress. The plan’s components, including mission, vision, core beliefs, and focus areas, will guide the district’s initiatives and are expected to be accessible to the public by the start of the school year.
The committee also addressed the integration of technology in education, highlighting the need for developmentally appropriate technology use in classrooms. Concerns were raised about digital literacy at the kindergarten level and the progression of device use as students advance in their education. Participants noted the challenges of managing students’ use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the importance of teaching them to navigate digital tools responsibly.
In addition to strategic planning and technology integration, the committee approved significant donations from the Education Fund. Two substantial grants, totaling over $800,000, were discussed, including a $450,000 lighting project for the auditorium and a $362,000 amphitheater project. Superintendent Tracy elaborated on the necessity of updating the auditorium’s lighting, as many existing fixtures were non-functional. The amphitheater project is intended to enhance the high school’s outdoor facilities. The committee expressed gratitude for these contributions and unanimously approved the donations.
Further discussions touched on the implications of a proposed late start time for schools and its impact on athletics. Concerns were raised about potential reductions in practice time for teams, particularly as daylight hours decrease in the fall. The committee examined feedback from surveys conducted among families and staff, focusing on the balance between academic schedules and extracurricular activities.
Updates were also provided on a Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) project involving a roof replacement, with a kickoff date set for June 22nd. The project, approved at a recent town meeting, remains budgeted at approximately $7.3 million. The committee clarified the process and financial commitments required, emphasizing hopes of completing the project under budget.
The meeting concluded with discussions on student accountability and the superintendent evaluation process. Members emphasized the importance of stakeholder engagement and the need for concrete communication strategies. The committee plans to finalize the evaluation at a future meeting. Additionally, the communication working group reported progress in establishing protocols for effective communication, seeking guidance from the Massachusetts Association of School Committees.
