Hammonton School Board Approves Strategic Plan to Elevate Student Achievement
- Meeting Overview:
The Hammonton School Board convened to address several initiatives, most notably approving a strategic plan aimed at elevating student achievement over the next five years. This comprehensive plan focuses on enhancing facilities, student learning, community partnerships, creative learning environments, and professional pathways.
Michelle Kennedy from the New Jersey School Boards Association presented the strategic plan, which was the result of a year-long collaborative effort involving various stakeholders. She detailed the careful process behind the plan’s development, emphasizing the importance of aligning the goals with the district’s mission statement. Kennedy outlined the strategic planning steps, which included assessing the district’s current state, envisioning its future, and identifying actionable goals. The board was encouraged to approve this plan and ensure its accessibility to the public via the district’s website.
With the board’s approval, the plan is set to guide future discussions on capital projects and policy changes. It aims to involve parents more deeply in their children’s education, particularly within the special education community.
Another highlight of the meeting was the acknowledgment of the community’s support through a successful fundraiser. A notable presentation featured the sale of 248 shirts, with a commitment to round the number to 300 as a gesture of thanks. A check for $1,500 was presented to the board, representing a portion of the proceeds. Board members recognized the positive reception of the shirts and their visibility within the community, emphasizing the initiative’s support for student athletes and programs.
Superintendent Thomas Ramsay also addressed the board, expressing gratitude for a smooth opening to the school year. He outlined upcoming events, such as back-to-school nights and a special education parent advisory group meeting scheduled for November 19. Ramsay highlighted the successful bilingual parent advisory committee meeting, noting its high attendance and engaging activities for children. He also mentioned the upcoming installation of playground equipment for the ECE and West buildings, anticipated to be ready within two to three weeks.
The board discussed several improvements and events at the Hammonton schools. These included painting senior parking spots, which took place the Sunday before Labor Day, and a college fair scheduled for September 25. The fair is expected to see increased participation, with representatives from 44 colleges, up from 28 the previous year. This growth is attributed to the efforts of Mike Ryan and his team. State testing updates were provided, noting two additional field tests for various grade levels, supported by guidance counselors and assistant principals.
The introduction of Blue Devil Time, a program designed to offer students additional support, was announced to start on September 22. This initiative encourages students to engage with teachers, clubs, and counselors, fostering a supportive educational environment.
Updates from Hammonton Middle School included the introduction of a cooking room and a classroom for multilingual students. Upcoming events like a dance and the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month were highlighted. The elementary school also reported a smooth opening, with acknowledgments to staff for their efforts. Recent playground enhancements were noted, with improvements to lighting and the installation of new equipment expected soon.
Board member comments included welcoming back staff and students, as well as acknowledging the impressive records of fall sports teams. The recent installation of a synthetic field was discussed, with satisfaction expressed regarding its performance. There was also mention of ongoing construction for an addition to the Early Childhood Education Center, with an emphasis on completing the project by next September.
The meeting concluded with public comments, including an introduction from a new middle school ESL teacher, who expressed enthusiasm for joining the district and contributing to student success. The board expressed overall satisfaction with the start of the school year.
