Hammonton School Board Highlights Excellence in Student Achievement and Community Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
The Hammonton School Board meeting on October 9, 2025, focused on the district’s strong performance in standardized testing, new educational programs, and community-supported projects, including the successful completion of a new playground. The meeting also addressed ongoing support for dyslexic students and celebrated the achievements of exemplary students and sports teams.
A major highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment (NJSLA) results for spring 2025. The district showed commendable performance, with scores either increasing or remaining steady in most assessed areas. The NJSLA evaluates students from grades three through nine in English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics, and in science for grades 5, 8, and 11. The majority of students met or exceeded expectations, with particularly strong performances from English Language Learners, students on free and reduced lunch, and special education students.
Among the commendable student achievements, several elementary students were recognized for achieving perfect scores on the NJSLA. This recognition included Kellen Frankle, Angus Man, Lily Mento, and notably, Aubrey Lombardo, who achieved perfect scores in both ELA and math. The board applauded these students, highlighting the district’s dedication to academic excellence.
This project, facilitated by a state grant secured with the help of assemblyman Michael Teresi, provides a safe space for physical activity and social interaction among students. The community’s contributions to the previous park, Penny Park, were acknowledged, with plans to place a recognition sign at the site.
In line with community engagement, the meeting also discussed the recent band competition, which drew a notable number of visitors to the area. The board expressed pride in the students’ achievements and the community’s role in supporting school activities.
Another topic was the focus on dyslexia awareness, with October being recognized for this cause. A parent raised concerns about the lack of continuity in support for dyslexic students transitioning from middle to high school, particularly the absence of Wilson Reading Program certification among high school staff. The parent stressed the necessity of sustained intervention, emphasizing that educational support should not diminish as students progress through different educational stages.
Various school programs and initiatives were also highlighted, such as the recent expansion of the preschool wing and the celebration of Fire Safety Week. The Hamilton Fire Department’s visit to schools provided essential fire safety information, while the Week of Respect encouraged kindness and community spirit through themed activities. Additionally, the district’s support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month was noted, along with the introduction of a new strings teacher and the inception of an afterschool orchestra club. These initiatives reflect the district’s dedication to holistic student development and community engagement.
The meeting further celebrated achievements in athletics, with board members commending fall sports teams for their successful records and contributions to team morale. The completion of the fieldhouse was lauded, providing enhanced facilities for sports teams and training efficiency, thanks to contributions from the Grid Iron Club and various donors.
