- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Hammonton School Board, the most significant event was the recognition of student athletes who have achieved accomplishments in track and field. The board honored two male athletes, Jake Edwards and Anthony Lovich, for breaking long-standing school records in high jump and shot put, respectively. In addition, the achievements of two female athletes, Jules D’Austino and Kylie Kowski, were celebrated for setting a new school record in the high jump relay event.
One item at the meeting involved Coach D, the boys’ track coach, detailing the accomplishments of his athletes. Jake Edwards was commended for breaking the high jump record set in 1975 and then again in 2015, with a leap of 6 feet 6 inches, which ranked him tied for second place in the state of New Jersey. Anthony Lovich was recognized for his outstanding performance in shot put, breaking the school record with a throw of 62 feet 10 inches, placing third in the state, first in Atlantic County history, and eighth in all of South Jersey history.
The girls’ track coach could not attend, but sent information that was reported by a board representative on the achievements of Jules D’Austino and Kylie Kowski. They broke the high jump relays school record at the recent Rowland Regionals with a combined jump of 9 feet 6 inches.
Aside from the athletic accolades, the meeting included comments from Superintendent Robin Chieco, expressing appreciation for the school district’s staff, from bus drivers to IT staff, for their contributions to the welfare of students. Additionally, several new hires introduced themselves to the board, including individuals recommended for teaching positions in early childhood education and as an ESL teacher. The board also acknowledged the retirement of a bus driver and a Middle School Systems administrator, expressing that these individuals would be missed.
Towards the end of the meeting, board members provided updates on various school activities and events, including prom, field trips, and concerts. They also highlighted the importance of the upcoming state testing for grades 3 through 9, urging parents to ensure their children are well-rested and present on testing days.
The meeting concluded with a public comment session, where community members had the opportunity to speak to the board. This included expressions of gratitude from imminent new teaching staff and a brief recess before the board moved on to finance and personnel matters. The board approved several motions related to finance, personnel, and student programs without discussion.
