Hammonton School District Celebrates Academic Excellence and Bids Farewell to Long-Serving Members
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Hammonton School Board meeting, Superintendent Thomas Ramsay presented outstanding standardized test results that positioned Hamilton students among the best in Atlantic County and New Jersey, while the board also bid farewell to two long-serving members, Mrs. Linda Byrnes and Mr. Ray Scipione, recognizing their decades of dedication to the district.
Superintendent Ramsay highlighted the performance of Hamilton School District students in standardized assessments, including the NJGPA and NJSLA. Notably, Hamilton High School’s ninth-grade ELA scores were ranked first in Atlantic County, surpassing other local high schools such as Mainland and Egg Harbor Township. Additionally, the ninth-grade algebra and geometry scores also secured top positions.
The meeting also served as a platform to express gratitude towards retiring board members Mrs. Byrnes and Mr. Scipione. Mrs. Byrnes was honored for her 50 years of service, including 38 years as an educator and 12 years on the board. Her extensive experience and institutional knowledge were acknowledged as invaluable assets to the board, and she was recognized as a mentor to newer members. Mr. Scipione was commended for his decade-long tenure, during which he navigated challenges and shared both personal and professional insights with the board. His contributions, characterized by a blend of humor and dedication, were fondly remembered by his colleagues.
Board members reflected on their time serving with Mrs. Byrnes and Mr. Scipione, sharing memories and expressing appreciation for their leadership and mentorship. The camaraderie and mutual respect among board members were evident, with many conveying well-wishes and acknowledging the impacts of their departing colleagues. Mr. Scipione’s transition to a new role on the town council was humorously noted.
In addition to academic achievements and farewells, the meeting included updates on school sports and extracurricular activities. The boys’ bowling team was celebrated for a successful start to their season, and upcoming basketball and wrestling events were anticipated with enthusiasm. A recent Powderpuff flag football game, which raised over $3,000 for the Hamilton Cancer Foundation and a local family affected by cancer, was described as a major success. The student council’s initiative to deliver gifts to children at Leap Academy in Camden was also highlighted.
The board expressed appreciation for the district’s staff, particularly during challenging times such as the recent flu outbreak. The custodial team’s efforts in deep cleaning the buildings to ensure a safe environment for students were commended.
