- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Hanover Town Council meeting, members adopted three ordinances pertaining to the implementation of speed humps throughout the township, a measure aimed at addressing speeding concerns in the area. This decision came after a resident raised questions regarding the safety implications for pedestrians and the decision-making process behind the selection of speed hump locations, particularly on Mountain Avenue. Township officials, including the mayor, assured that recommendations from a traffic consultant were considered and that pedestrian safety and street layout would be integral to the design of the speed humps.
Following the adoption of the speed hump ordinances, the council introduced two new ordinances focused on the modernization of the Township’s communication and technology infrastructure and the renovation of the municipal building’s public and conference rooms. Additionally, an ordinance was unexpectedly introduced for the improvement of the B Metal Pool, which was not originally on the agenda but was met with a motion and subsequent approval from the council.
The council authorized a professional service agreement with Robert H. Binefeld Esquire and the firm of Hawkins, Delafield, and Wood LLP for bond counsel services. The meeting also included an approval for the payment of bills totaling $6,669,341. An update on the township’s affordable housing obligation was provided, highlighting new legislation and potential litigation, with a specific mention of ongoing negotiations for a property called South Campus adjacent to Bear headquarters.
Public comments opened discussions on various aspects of community safety, including improved crosswalk safety and the need for better sidewalk clearance in winter. The council also addressed initiatives to combat urban heat islands, ongoing road paving efforts, and provided updates on events for seniors and the status of Ston Brook Farm. Anticipation was expressed for a report on the Marston Municipal Airport and the activities of the township’s seniors club were highlighted.
Other topics discussed included the potential expansion of condominiums and apartments for residents lacking access to private outdoor spaces, with particular emphasis on the necessity for such developments in Hanover Township. The Landmark Commission reported a successful tour on July 4th, the Hanover Police Department briefed on their distracted driving campaign, and the receipt of a grant for the “Move Over Law” enforcement program. Further, a resident’s request for speed bumps on Summit Avenue was acknowledged, and the township was commended by an independent auditor for its financial strength. Lastly, the Fire District brought up the topic of possibly consolidating fire districts within the township.
