Kendra Simpson, a special education parent advocate, further elaborated on the transition challenges her daughter faced between school levels, highlighting the absence of proper accommodations. Simpson proposed a special education open house to allow families to familiarize themselves with the school environment, thereby reducing sensory overload for students. She also suggested establishing a district-wide special education parent group to foster better communication and collaboration with the district. Simpson’s insights underscored a broader sentiment among parents of feeling marginalized and dismissed, as she remarked on the adversarial perception between parents and staff.

The board acknowledged these issues and advised parents to document interactions with the school to ensure accountability. One member emphasized the necessity of open dialogue and transparency, urging parents to utilize board members’ accessible emails to voice concerns.

In addition to issues surrounding special education, community members Melanie Cook and Jen Dodson criticized the district’s communication failures regarding the William Penn demolition project. Both expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of notice and information provided to residents, resulting in confusion about the project’s schedule, methods, and potential environmental impacts. Cook specifically addressed the scheduling of the special meeting, which conflicted with the National Night Out event, limiting community participation.

The meeting also addressed administrative matters, particularly the resignation of Dr. Marshia Stokes, whose departure was effective as of September 14, 2026. Board members expressed gratitude for Dr. Stokes’s contributions, particularly her expertise in financial management, which helped the district maintain low taxes and achieve an improved bond rating.
