Hawthorne Borough Council Takes Action on Fairview Avenue Safety and Upcoming Infrastructure Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Hawthorne Borough Council meeting, a focus was on enhanced safety measures along Fairview Avenue following a tragic accident last year, alongside updates on various infrastructure projects causing traffic congestion. The council also recognized local environmental efforts, discussed parking issues, and addressed community events.
The council discussed ongoing efforts to enhance traffic safety along Fairview Avenue, where a fatal motor vehicle accident occurred last year. The Hawthorne Police Department, in collaboration with the North Hilden Police Department, has implemented several measures to curb the use of the road by overweight trucks. These measures include installing new signage and conducting targeted traffic enforcement details. In April, officers conducted 29 enforcement details, followed by 33 in May, resulting in numerous summonses and warnings issued to violators. The police have also trained patrol officers in commercial motor vehicle enforcement to ensure compliance with state statutes and local ordinances. These actions have reportedly reduced the frequency of overweight trucks using the area, contributing to improved safety.
Another issue discussed at the meeting was the impact of concurrent infrastructure projects on traffic patterns in the borough. Public Service and Gas (PS&G) is conducting a gas line installation, while Fairlon has started a water line project on River Road, with River Street set for repaving. These projects have led to significant traffic congestion, with a council member expressing frustration over the planning, noting extensive delays. The borough has been informed of some closures and construction timelines, but communication has not always been timely, adding to the disruption. The council plans to seek clarification from county officials to prevent similar issues in future events.
In addition to traffic and safety concerns, the meeting highlighted local environmental achievements. The council recognized the 2026 annual June environmental program led by Environmental Commissioner Rayna Laiosa, which this year included honoring both students and local green businesses. Andrea Napano, a STEM teacher at Lincoln Middle School, and Teresa Der Manimo, a library media specialist at Hawthorne High School, were acknowledged for their contributions to environmental education. The council also honored Emma Regal for her selection to attend the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment, an initiative partnering with the Smithsonian National Zoo and the Conservation Biological Institute.
Company representatives Tony Ferrer and Eric Larson shared insights into their community initiatives and restoration work, emphasizing the environmental benefits of preservation over demolition.
Parking issues in the pool area and near a local gym were also addressed. Residents expressed concerns about gym patrons occupying residential parking spaces, leading to inconvenience. Suggestions were made to implement resident-only parking stickers or enforce stricter parking restrictions to address the overflow issue. The council emphasized the need for the property owner to take responsibility for the parking situation, as it affects public areas.
The council also focused on the upcoming community events and initiatives. The mayor reminded attendees about air conditioning safety as summer approaches and provided updates on the full-time opening schedule of the local pool. The council expressed interest in partnering with Valley Health for another health fair in the fall, following the success of a recent event that attracted over 300 attendees.
During the meeting, the council took the opportunity to congratulate local high school graduates and discussed plans for the opening of the band shell on July 11th, which will feature a patriotic-themed music presentation with food trucks and a laser show to celebrate the nation’s 250th anniversary. The event schedule includes concerts planned every Sunday until the end of August.
The council also addressed administrative matters, including the reappointment of Chris Deella and the appointment of Gary Montroy as the housing code official. A set of resolutions, including liquor license renewals and tax exemptions for disabled veterans, was approved without dissent.
