Hawthorne School Board Applauds Student Achievements and Evaluates New Assessment Tools
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Hawthorne School Board meeting focused heavily on student performance metrics, educational interventions, and school safety initiatives. Key highlights included a substantial improvement in student proficiency rates in English Language Arts and mathematics, the introduction of new assessment tools, and the recognition of long-serving educators.
Central to the meeting was the discussion of student proficiency in English Language Arts (ELA) and math. The board reviewed a report indicating a positive trend in ELA proficiency rates, which increased from 55% to 61%. Similarly, math proficiency saw an uptick from 34% to 41%. Notably, the number of students exceeding standards rose in both subjects. However, the fluctuation in student numbers, particularly from eighth to ninth grade, complicated year-to-year comparisons. An analysis of cohort growth demonstrated notable improvements, with fourth graders increasing their proficiency by 11.68% from the previous year, and fifth to sixth graders seeing an 18.9% increase. Despite these gains, certain grades, such as the fourth and ninth, showed challenges in maintaining consistent performance levels.
The board also delved into the effectiveness of various interventions and assessment tools. A key development was the shift from the Renaissance Star 360 assessment to the Irene Universal Screener, complemented by the My Path intervention system. This platform provides individualized learning experiences across grades K-12, with kindergarten students engaging in tailored educational games. The data from these tools is reportedly aiding in refining instructional practices and improving student outcomes. Additionally, the district’s standards-based grading system was highlighted as contributing to the observed improvements in state exam performance.
A significant portion of the meeting addressed the restructuring of intervention courses. A pilot program for eighth graders, involving a small core class of 12 students, was introduced to provide focused instruction for those struggling in math. This initiative replaces previous intervention courses that were deemed ineffective. The board expressed optimism about expanding this program if successful.
Concerns about science test performance, particularly in the eighth and eleventh grades, were also raised. It was noted that these assessments are not linked to graduation requirements, which may affect student motivation. The board acknowledged the need to address this gap and ensure better alignment between instructional content and assessment items.
In addition to academic discussions, the meeting recognized the contributions of educators and volunteers. The superintendent acknowledged a member of the preschool program for her 25 years of service. The board also welcomed new hires and volunteers, including volunteer wrestling coaches, and praised the social media club’s initiatives at the middle school.
Security measures were another focal point, with updates on a recent security walkthrough conducted in collaboration with security officers. This walkthrough identified areas where additional cameras could be beneficial, and the implementation of a student swiping system at the high school was noted as effective. The board emphasized the importance of continuing to enhance security measures across the district.
Financial discussions covered various topics, including the financial implications of out-of-district students and the need to achieve a break-even point. The Buildings and Grounds Committee reported on ongoing projects, including the completion of items from a recent referendum and proposed upgrades to the athletic complex facilities. The finance administration segment included discussions on financial reports, the hiring of an advocate for securing additional revenue, and an audit of the food service program.
