Hawthorne School Board Recognizes Outstanding Educators and Increases Substitute Pay Amid Financial Discussions
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Hawthorne School Board meeting highlighted the recognition of outstanding educators, an increase in substitute teacher pay, and discussions on financial allocations and community engagement initiatives.
The meeting’s most significant highlight was the recognition of several educators and professionals within the Hawthorne School District, celebrated through the GOI program. This program honors those who have demonstrated exceptional professional practice and contribution to school culture. Among those recognized was Amy Tan from Hawthorne High School, praised for her 23 years of exemplary service and contributions to the educational community. Mrs. Alexa Tannis was also commended for her leadership in the mathematics department, noted for her mentorship of new teachers and her ability to create an engaging and collaborative classroom environment.
Miss Victoria Sappino, named Teacher of the Year at Lincoln Middle School, was acknowledged for her compassion and leadership within the special education department. Her hands-on teaching methods and involvement in after-school clubs were particularly highlighted. Mrs. Wendy Fowler received the Service Professional of the Year award for her creativity and dedication in supporting student needs, as exemplified by her efforts to transform a disappointing field trip into a memorable pumpkin patch event.
Recognition extended to Miss Jennifer Godfrey, a first-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School, for her engaging and creative instruction that fosters a love of learning. Her commitment to maintaining communication with families was also emphasized. Mrs. Carrie Parker, a behavior consultant, was recognized for her implementation of research-based practices and support of ABA programs. Miss Claudia Rossi from Washington Elementary School was celebrated for her professionalism and commitment to meeting the academic and emotional needs of her students.
In addition to these accolades, Miss Lisa Surles was posthumously recognized for her contributions as a behaviorist, having served the district for over 20 years. Her leadership in developing the steps program was lauded. The recognition segment concluded with attendees expressing gratitude for the honorees.
The meeting also addressed financial matters, notably the increase in substitute teacher pay to $130 per day. This adjustment aligns with neighboring Bergen County districts and aims to maintain smooth day-to-day operations within the schools. The board members acknowledged the important role of substitutes in the educational process and expressed appreciation for the board’s efforts in this regard.
Financial discussions included the allocation of funds from the maintenance reserve account, specifically the withdrawal of $100,000 to address urgent maintenance needs such as boiler repairs. The superintendent clarified that these funds are intended for ongoing maintenance rather than specific capital projects. The board emphasized the importance of maintaining financial stability while ensuring necessary repairs and upgrades are addressed promptly.
Community engagement was another focal point, with the introduction of the Hawthorne High School Bears Athletic Hall of Fame. The inaugural class of inductees, announced by a community member, includes former athletes, coaches, and contributors who have impacted the school’s athletic program. An induction ceremony is scheduled for March 26, 2026, with plans to promote the event through social media and school reports.
The meeting also featured discussions on curriculum and instruction, including the introduction of new courses for the 2026-27 school year. These courses include three Advanced Placement options: AP Cyber Security, AP Pre-Calculus, and AP Business and Personal Finance. Additional offerings such as Rock Band II, Dance IV, and advanced middle school classes were discussed.
Lastly, public comments provided community members with an opportunity to voice opinions and updates. Suggestions included coordinating with various departments to avoid scheduling conflicts on board meeting nights, thereby encouraging greater public participation. The idea of fostering connections between middle and high school students through shared activities and events was also proposed.
