- Meeting Overview:
The Hawthorne School Board meeting, held at 7:00 PM, covered a range of topics including the acquisition of a $500,000 grant aimed at boosting security across the district’s five school buildings, strategic planning updates, staffing challenges, and community engagement initiatives.
The meeting’s most notable discussion centered on the district’s successful acquisition of a $500,000 grant from the 2024 COPS Grant program, awarded to only 203 out of 1,080 applicants. This grant will facilitate the replacement and upgrade of public address systems and handheld radios used by administrators, security personnel, and bus drivers. The collaboration with local police will improve emergency communication links, thereby enhancing overall safety protocols. The grant notification was received the previous Thursday, prompting an immediate commitment to expedite the necessary processes to utilize the funds effectively.
In addition to this, the board provided an update on the district’s strategic plan, which began in 2023 and spans five years with annual goals. A document outlining the previous school year’s achievements related to these goals is available on the district’s website. A more discussion on the strategic plan and a testing report is scheduled for the upcoming board meeting in October.
Staffing changes and the ongoing teacher shortage were another focus of the meeting. The board acknowledged recent resignations, including the loss of a CO assistant football coach, and discussed the complexities of staff departures. It was noted that reasons for leaving vary widely, including personal circumstances and job market conditions. Efforts to fill specialized positions, such as language teachers, were highlighted as crucial given the current shortage. The administration’s efforts were recognized, particularly their partnership with Ramapo College, which has been successful in providing student teachers.
The board also celebrated new hires and the addition of 26 new staff members, including a new administrator in a previously unfilled role. They recognized six staff members who have dedicated 25 years of service to the district, celebrating their long-term contributions to the community. Despite these positive additions, the challenge of hiring for specialized positions, such as a new dance teacher, remains.
Another topic was the recent veto by Governor Murphy of legislation A218/S3000, aimed at addressing the school bus driver shortage. This bill would have allowed the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission to issue a new Type S School Bus certificate, permitting individuals to transport children without needing a commercial driver’s license. Governor Murphy’s veto cited concerns about student safety, including the lack of specific safety and inspection requirements for the vehicles and inadequate oversight of individuals holding the Type S School Bus certificate.
The board also discussed the financial implications of a new local educational facility expected to accommodate an additional 800 students. The estimated cost for this project is around $24 million, with the county contributing $7 million. Concerns were raised about the financial burden on local school budgets, emphasizing that local districts would need to cover the additional funding required to educate these new students. One member highlighted the competitive nature of funding, stating that the new facility could detract from resources available for existing local districts.
Community engagement was another focal point, with the board highlighting successful back-to-school nights and encouraging parents to participate in upcoming events. The high school received recognition for becoming an ambassador for the “No Place for Hate” initiative, promoting an inclusive and respectful environment. The high school marching band, known as the Marching Bears, was congratulated for securing first place in their division at a recent competition.
Financial discussions included the approval of a bill list for September and the acknowledgment of various donations, such as dictionaries for third-grade students from the local Rotary Club and financial support for the high school robotics club. The board also addressed the higher costs associated with contracting agencies due to the teacher shortage, emphasizing the financial strain on the district.
