Headline: East Longmeadow Library’s Children’s Department Shelving Collapse Raises Safety Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the East Longmeadow Library Board, attention was directed towards a shelving unit collapse in the children’s department, which temporarily closed the area and prompted swift action from the library staff and the Department of Public Works (DPW). The board also discussed the upcoming summer reading program and ADA improvements throughout the library.
One notable issue discussed was the collapse of a shelving unit in the children’s department, which occurred without warning and could have posed a serious safety risk had anyone been in the vicinity at the time. Fortunately, no one was injured. The unit, which held graphic novels, fell completely off the wall, and library staff, along with the DPW, worked promptly to clean up and reorganize the area. The board discussed possible reasons for the collapse, including whether it was properly secured to the wall. While the shelving is no longer in use, books have been relocated until new shelving can be installed.
In addition, the board discussed preparations for the 2026 summer reading program, “Plant a Seed, Read,” which aims to engage young readers and their families. The program is ready in Beanstack, with weekly and grand prizes displayed to generate excitement. The children’s department is also expanding its Library of Things collection by adding new puzzles and educational games.
The meeting also covered updates on ongoing ADA improvements in the library. New listening devices for assisted living are now available during programming, signage installations are complete, and external walkway and flooring installations have begun. These updates are part of a broader initiative to make the library more accessible and user-friendly for all patrons.
Furthermore, the library continues to enhance its programming across age groups. In the adult department, efforts to promote digital literacy in collaboration with the town and local organizations have been successful, despite some technical challenges with devices. The library also hosted a successful blood drive and plans to repeat the event in the fall.
