Heating System Issues and Academic Achievements Highlight Hammonton School Board Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Hammonton School Board meeting on January 16, 2025, addressed a range of topics, including significant heating issues at the Middle School, outstanding achievements in sports and academics, and updates on strategic planning and policy evaluation. The board also recognized the accomplishments of student-athletes and educators, and discussed important community contributions and upcoming events.
The meeting started with a issue affecting the Middle School—malfunctions in the heating system during a period of extreme cold. The system, initially running at as low as 15 to 20% efficiency, necessitated the rental of heating units for each classroom. Repairs improved functionality to about 80%, but two out of six compressors still needed replacement. The board acknowledged the swift actions taken to mitigate the issue and emphasized the importance of a long-term solution.
In a celebratory tone, the board recognized the accomplishments of Hammonton High School’s sports teams. The girls’ field hockey team was lauded for their remarkable season, finishing with a record of 18 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. They triumphed in the Cape Atlantic League (CAL) tournament and claimed the title of American Division champions, scoring 104 goals—their highest since 2014. The girls’ volleyball team also set a new school record with 22 wins, achieving success in the CAL tournament and advancing to the Group III sectional semifinals. Individual accolades included Natalie Claus, a standout cross-country runner who became only the second athlete in the school’s history to qualify for the state Group III championship, setting five new course records along the way.
Academic achievements were equally celebrated. Hammonton High School boasted the highest English Language Arts and math scores among 11th graders in Atlantic County. The Superintendent highlighted that the school had the second-best ninth-grade English Language Arts scores and top geometry scores in the county. Middle school students also excelled, with second-best Algebra I scores, and commendable performances in sixth-grade reading and writing and eighth-grade math. These accomplishments were attributed to the dedicated efforts of teachers and support from parents and the community.
In addition to student achievements, the board discussed upcoming changes and initiatives. A significant donation of $5,000 from the Rotary Club for the West Greenhouse was noted, aimed at supporting a Mother’s Day fundraiser. This initiative involves growing basil and other plants, highlighting community involvement and student engagement. The board also touched on strategic planning, with plans to collaborate with the New Jersey School Boards Association to set district goals. This process will include special meetings dedicated to strategic planning in the coming months.
The meeting also covered various updates from Hammonton High School and Middle School. A winter band and choir concert was well-received, generating excitement for an upcoming formal dance, the Hop, for ninth and tenth-grade students. Middle school activities included festive events, a spirit week, and a farewell concert for a retiring band director. The retirement of a longtime middle school employee, Miss Arlene Robo, after 24 years of service, was announced.
Attention was also given to policy matters, particularly the kindergarten age cutoff and senior privileges. The board clarified that children must be five years old by October 1st to enroll in kindergarten, with further review of the policy planned. Discussions on senior privileges remained ongoing, with a questionnaire set to gather input from students and parents.
The meeting provided a platform for public comment, although no community members voiced their thoughts during the initial opportunity. Later, a newly appointed special education teacher expressed gratitude for joining the team.
As the meeting concluded, a board member addressed recent comments in The Gazette regarding leadership roles, emphasizing the importance of non-conflicted positions. This discussion, reflecting differing views on board governance, was mediated by the board president, allowing members to articulate their perspectives before adjourning the meeting.
