Heritage Preservation Commission Prepares for Upcoming SHPO Fall Conference in New Ulm
- Meeting Overview:
The New Ulm Heritage Preservation Commission meeting focused on finalizing preparations for the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) Fall Conference, scheduled to take place in New Ulm from September 10th to 12th. Key discussions revolved around event logistics, volunteer assignments, and coordination with SHPO representatives.
The SHPO Fall Conference will begin with an opening reception at Shell’s Brewery, where attendees can gather from 5:00 to 7:00 PM. The reception will be managed by SHPO, with no need for additional volunteers, though commission members are encouraged to attend to assist with any inquiries from participants.
On September 11th, the conference will feature breakfast and registration at Turner Hall, followed by sessions at both Turner Hall and State Street Theater. The need for volunteers to guide participants between the venues was emphasized, as there is concern about attendees potentially getting lost in the short distance between locations. Specific assignments for these roles were discussed.
The commission also addressed logistical details for the keynote address at the State Street Theater and the subsequent lunch back at Turner Hall. Social events will include a meet-and-greet at The Grand with a cash bar and food truck, as well as trivia hosted by John Nisley and Mayor Kathleen Backer.
On September 12th, the conference will continue with more sessions and a bus tour to Artstone and Shell’s Brewery. The commission clarified that only one bus would be needed, as all participants will visit both locations sequentially. Additional tours include a horse-drawn trolley ride from German Park and a downtown walking tour beginning at the Brown County Historical Society Museum.
The commission confirmed that several local attractions, including the museum, will be open for free tours to conference attendees. Coordination with the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce ensures that local restaurants are informed of the influx of visitors, offering participants a variety of dining options.
