Heroic Actions and Community Engagement Highlight Washington Township Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Washington Township Council meeting in Gloucester County, the Council recognized outstanding community members and addressed concerns ranging from public safety to infrastructure issues. Honors were awarded to a detective for exemplary police work, citizens for their invaluable assistance in investigations, and an eight-year-old boy for his quick thinking in a family emergency. In addition, residents voiced concerns about property maintenance and business registration, with the Council addressing these issues and emphasizing the importance of community cooperation and effective governance.
0:00The meeting began with a series of commendations, with the Chief of Police recognizing Detective Matthew Len Slagger as the 2024 Police Officer of the Year. Detective Len Slagger’s innovative investigative work in solving a significant hit-and-run case was praised. The Chief underscored the detective’s dedication and the impact of his work on public safety.
Following the detective’s recognition, the Council honored Tom and Tony Viro, Sky Robertson, and James Donado with the 2024 Distinguished Citizen Award. Their cooperation exemplified the spirit of community caretaking, as noted by the Chief, and each recipient was acknowledged with applause.
A particularly heartwarming moment came when the Council recognized eight-year-old Leland Christensen for his heroic actions during a family medical emergency. Leland called 911 when his mother became unresponsive and ensured the safety of his family until help arrived. The Chief commended Leland’s composure and quick thinking, presenting him with a token of recognition. Leland modestly shared that his family had taught him how to call 911.
The meeting transitioned into discussions on infrastructure, with updates on snow removal operations provided by Public Works Director Frank Alamira and team member Brian McCaffrey. They detailed the challenges faced during recent snowstorms, including the extensive road network comprising approximately 720 roads and 200 courts. Brian elaborated on the difficulties encountered with rapidly dropping temperatures that rendered salt ineffective on icy roads. The department deployed 41 pieces of equipment, working through the night to clear roads, although some side roads remained icy due to shaded conditions. The Council expressed appreciation for the team’s hard work, with a member humorously dubbing Frank “Frank Snowman” due to the frequent snow events.
30:49Council members also discussed various resolutions, including a significant grant approval for the Washington Lake Park inclusive playground project totaling $450,000. This grant, from the Department of Community Affairs, will support the creation of a playground accessible to children of all abilities. Other resolutions included the acceptance of a maintenance guarantee for the Washington Lake Park improvements, the release of a safety and stabilization bond for Walmart, and amendments to the employee procedures manual.
Public comments brought forth several community concerns. Christy Moore raised issues about a dilapidated fence separating her property from a local business, citing safety risks for her children and pets. Despite filing a complaint in March 2023, the responses received were deemed inadequate, with only temporary fixes applied. The solicitor, acknowledging the concern, promised to follow up with the zoning officer for resolution.
52:23Another resident questioned the structural integrity of a property, urging the Council to enforce local ordinances to prevent potential legal action if the issue remains unaddressed. The solicitor reiterated the Council’s obligation to enforce ordinances and assured the resident of further investigation.
Business registration fees were also a topic of discussion, with a business owner expressing frustration over receiving a late notice with fines. The owner highlighted a lack of prior communication from the township’s offices. The Council president acknowledged these concerns and mentioned ongoing efforts to improve the township’s registration processes.
30:49One member shared positive developments in economic discussions aimed at generating new business opportunities in the township. Another encouraged patience among residents as the new administration transitions from a long-standing single-party rule, acknowledging the time needed to implement changes.
