- Meeting Overview:
The Bound Brook School Board meeting this week honored students and staff, discussed structural issues in the high school gym, and celebrated a bus driver for his life-saving actions during a recent bus fire.
One item at the meeting was the recognition of Kenny, the lead bus driver, for his quick and heroic response during a bus fire incident. Kenny’s actions were commended for preventing a potentially dangerous situation, and he received accolades from the police for his life-saving efforts. Kenny humbly attributed his response to instinct rather than heroism. The board and attendees expressed their gratitude through applause.
Following Kenny’s recognition, the board celebrated the achievements of various students across the district. Dr. Freeman introduced the student recognitions, starting with Dylan from the preschool program, who was praised for his love of play and arts and his aspiration to become a police officer. Other students recognized included Moranda Picado from kindergarten, Emma Chone from first grade, Tyler Bailey from second grade, Stevenson Boso Martinez from third grade, Ara De Ailla from fourth grade, David Hernandez from fifth grade, and Michaela Cwell from sixth grade. Each student was celebrated for their accomplishments and future career goals, which ranged from teaching to soccer and other professions.
Community Middle School students were also acknowledged, with Emry Medina named the seventh-grade student of the month for her interest in soccer and creative hobbies. Eighth grader Jeremy Stellar was noted for his interests in social studies and cooking, with aspirations to become a chef and restaurant owner. High school students Emma Baker, Nelson Santos, Allison Moa, and Xavier Ortiz were honored as Crusader Citizens of the Month, recognized for their positive citizenship traits and diverse career aspirations.
In addition to student recognitions, the board honored staff members for their dedication and contributions. Miss Christian was named educator of the month for her commitment to student growth and professional development. Arya Driscoll was recognized as employee of the month for her role as the school secretary, praised for her professionalism and organizational skills. The meeting featured applause and congratulations for all recognized individuals, with a celebratory atmosphere as group photographs were taken.
The board then moved on to discuss structural issues in the high school gym, particularly concerning retractable backboards. A structural engineer was engaged to assess the facility and recommended ground-penetrating radar tests to check for rebar, which was noted to be absent. This necessitated more extensive repair work to ensure structural integrity. The engineer assured the committee that the facility was safe for use but emphasized the need for repairs. The board considered traditional rebar installation and a new technology offering a mesh steel membrane for reinforcement, despite potential higher costs and longer construction times. Additional security measures were planned for events, particularly during basketball games, to ensure safety.
In the governance committee report, new policies focused on vaccination mandates and a proposal allowing students to attend one Civic Day per year as an excused absence. The committee also discussed a potential bill allowing student-athletes to replace physical education classes with study halls, highlighting the benefits for high school students managing jobs and family responsibilities. The board was excited about a draft of the new strategic plan and a scheduled training session on student achievement for board members in December, aimed at achieving Master Board Certification.
The education committee report emphasized the positive impact of teachers and administrators in facilitating student growth. One member stated, “It was really inspiring to see that all the work our teachers and our administrators are doing.” The committee also announced the introduction of a new club, the Life Skills Exchange Club, aimed at teaching students essential life skills. Upcoming events included Back to School Night, Bound Brook’s homecoming, recreation basketball tryouts, and a Fire Prevention Week hosted by the local fire department.
A update was provided on a recent bus fire, stating that the incident had been addressed by the insurance carrier, and a replacement bus was in the process of being acquired. The meeting also addressed a new field trip request to a planetarium and inquiries about fundraising efforts to support this initiative.
During the personnel resolutions discussion, the board approved agreements with universities to address the shortage of educators, emphasizing their potential to cultivate future talent through student teaching and internship opportunities. The board also discussed the 50th reunion of the class of 1974, highlighting positive relationships between alumni and current staff and the organized tour of the schools, which received praise for its warm reception and the calm and energetic atmosphere in the schools.
