Heroic Police Rescue and Dual Accreditation Highlight Woodbridge Council Meeting
- Meeting Overview:
The Woodbridge Township Council meeting centered on notable achievements by the Woodbridge Police Department, including life-saving rescues during a fire and the department’s recent attainment of state accreditation.
The meeting began with a significant recognition of the Woodbridge Police Department’s valor and dedication. Mayor John E. McCormac honored several officers for their heroic actions during a structure fire on October 4, 2025. The officers, including Sergeant Jorge Casada, Detective Owen Sharky, and Officers Robert McPartland, Ryan Trudeell, and Michael Granachia, were commended for their bravery in rescuing four residents from a burning building. The Mayor detailed how the officers entered the smoke-filled structure, locating and saving two elderly residents from a second-floor window and evacuating two more using an extension ladder. The Mayor expressed profound gratitude, acknowledging that the officers’ actions had likely saved lives and underscoring the department’s exceptional training and readiness.
In conjunction with the firefighting efforts, the meeting celebrated Traffic Investigator Christopher Estz, named Officer of the Quarter for the third quarter of 2025. Estz was recognized for his extensive traffic enforcement, including the issuance of 547 traffic-related summonses and his role in implementing new ordinances to regulate electric bikes, which the Mayor described as increasingly problematic.
Further elevating the department’s accomplishments, Harry Delgado, the New Jersey State Accreditation Manager, addressed the council to commend the Woodbridge Police Department for achieving state accreditation. Delgado emphasized the rigorous standards met by the department, making Woodbridge one of only three departments in New Jersey with both national and state accreditations. This achievement reflects the department’s adherence to best practices and strong community relationships, as confirmed by feedback from various stakeholders, including residents, business owners, and school districts. The Mayor and Police Director echoed these sentiments, highlighting the department’s openness to scrutiny and validation through independent evaluations.
The meeting then addressed local development concerns, particularly a proposed construction project involving 30 new apartment units on a street previously identified as noisy. Residents expressed skepticism about the plans, citing unchanged infrastructure and existing traffic issues exacerbated by local business operations. A council member defended the project.
The meeting also featured a series of announcements related to community events and developments. Council members acknowledged Veterans Day, with one council member urging residents to honor veterans during an upcoming parade. The council highlighted successful local high school football teams and community programs, such as the Woodbridge Broncos football program, which achieved significant victories. The council promoted upcoming events, including holiday celebrations, a new Trader Joe’s store opening, and employment opportunities.
