- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the High Point Regional High School Board of Education tackled issues impacting the community, including the approval of the 2024-2025 budget, an increase in the tax levy, and concerns over student safety, substance abuse, and violence incidents. Key highlights from the gathering involved the public hearing on the final budget, the celebration of student achievements, and the discussion on the abolition of Policy 5755, which deals with educational equity.
The board presented a comprehensive budget for the 2024-2025 academic year, spotlighting a 1.75% increase in the tax levy and a reduction in the overall operating budget by 3.27%, despite an almost $200,000 increase in state aid compared to the previous year. The fiscal plan, presented by Dr. Scott Ripley, underscored the district’s efforts to manage spending while maintaining staffing levels in the wake of state aid reductions over the past 11 years. Moreover, the budget presentation detailed the impact of the tax levy on each municipality, with Branchville residents seeing a $104 increase in their tax bill for a $200,000 house, attributed to the number of students sent to High Point relative to other schools.
The board emphasized their fiscal responsibility, which allowed them to avoid cutting positions, and highlighted various student accomplishments, including the successful induction of new Honor Society members, significant scholarships awarded during the High Point Art Invitational, and the chamber singers receiving top honors at a music festival in Boston. The Athletics department celebrated the success of their sports teams, and the College and Career Fair was noted as a considerable event providing students with diverse postsecondary opportunities.
A decline in incidents over the past three years was acknowledged; however, there was an uptick in the last four months. The administrative burden and costs associated with compliance with the harassment, intimidation, and bullying law were also discussed.
The board addressed the implementation of Smart Pass technology, praised for its positive results and potential future uses, and noted the school’s preparation for upcoming events such as a prevention activity, prom, and senior scholarship dinner. Additionally, the resignation of John Gardner as the wrestling coach and that of the head ice hockey coach, Michael Beltran, were discussed, with board members expressing their appreciation for their dedication and contributions.
In terms of policy, the board recommended the abolition of Policy 5755 concerning educational equity, approving revised policies and regulations related to educational equity, equal employment opportunities, and anti-discrimination practices. The effort to keep the budget increase below the 2% cap was a focal point of discussion, considering the taxpayers’ impact. The board gratefully accepted various donations and approved a contract with Maschio’s Food Service Management Company for the upcoming school year.
During the public comments section, a parent raised concerns about incorrect information in their child’s records, requesting a correction and suggesting the possibility of retaliation. A board member responded. The board also honored the memory of Miss Virginia Perry, a long-term staff member who passed away, acknowledging her significant influence on the community.
