High Point School Board Sets Ambitious Goals for AI Education and School Wellness
- Meeting Overview:
During a recent High Point School Board meeting, members adopted new goals focused on enhancing school wellness and increasing awareness of artificial intelligence (AI) among students and staff. The board unanimously approved a resolution outlining these objectives for the 2025-2026 school year.
One of the primary goals introduced was the enhancement of school climate through wellness initiatives for both students and staff. This initiative aims to address student behavior and engagement by implementing intervention strategies and expanding classroom practices. Professional development for staff to assist at-risk students is a key component of this plan.
The second major goal is to increase awareness and understanding of AI. The board seeks to ensure responsible and effective use of AI technologies within the school community. This initiative encourages both students and staff to engage with AI in a manner that promotes productivity and responsible citizenship.
In addition to setting these forward-looking goals, the board also addressed a variety of operational matters. A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to reviewing reports on faculty and student attendance rates, disciplinary actions, and harassment, intimidation, and bullying incidents, although the latter report was noted as missing an attachment. The board consolidated these items for approval, which passed without discussion.
Another discussion centered on the district’s action plan to address chronic absenteeism, an issue that has been a challenge across New Jersey. The district reported a commendable reduction in absenteeism rates to 14.7%, which is notably lower compared to other local high schools. This achievement was attributed to the diligent work of the guidance team and office staff, who have focused on providing targeted support to at-risk students.
A special event was announced to honor first responders and military veterans, scheduled for September 12 to coincide with a football game at High Point. This initiative, organized by an administrative leader, aims to recognize and celebrate the contributions of these community members.
The board also discussed a partnership with T-Mobile, which plans to engage the community through a social media contest intended to raise funds for school facilities. This effort, spearheaded by the same administrative leader, encourages participation on platforms like Instagram and Twitter.
In terms of achievements, the board celebrated the continued success of the school’s baseball team. This success was complemented by the completion of a new baseball clubhouse, a project driven by the booster club and community volunteers. The clubhouse will serve multiple purposes, providing storage and a space for live game announcements.
Curriculum and instructional updates were also provided, with a focus on enhancing school culture and improving professional development practices. An audit conducted over a three-year period resulted in a high effectiveness rating for the district, despite challenges such as chronic absenteeism. The successful audit reflects the district’s ongoing efforts to improve educational outcomes and maintain high standards.
Personnel matters were addressed, including appointments and resignations. The board approved various administrative roles and the hiring of instructional and support staff for the upcoming school years. The appointment of Sheamus Campbell as the affirmative action officer and Brian Benmer as the Title II ADA coordinator were notable decisions made during this segment.
Extracurricular activities received attention, with the approval of revised contracts and new appointments, including the appointment of Thomas Edge as head boys’ soccer coach. This decision followed the resignation of the previous coach.
Finance-related items were also addressed, with the board approving a comprehensive maintenance plan for the upcoming school year and acknowledging a donation of woodworking equipment valued at $3,500 to enhance the district’s STEM program. The board expressed gratitude to the donor for their generous contribution.
Transportation contracts were reviewed, with several agreements and renewals approved. A board member abstained from voting on specific items due to potential conflicts of interest but supported the remaining proposals.
