- Meeting Overview:
In a recognition at the Highlands Borough Council meeting on July 17, 2024, the community came together to honor Michael Roth for his initiative to unify his neighborhood through a creative art project, crafted in memory of his late wife. Using reclaimed pallet wood, Roth designed and created house number artwork for each home on his street, earning him a proclamation from the council and applause from members and attendees alike.
Beyond this touching tribute, the council addressed infrastructure developments, including the passage of two ordinances that will impact local residents. In parallel, safety concerns on Lighthouse Road prompted the second ordinance, which will establish the area as a no-parking zone to mitigate the effects of increased traffic.
The meeting also delved into the preparation for upcoming electoral decisions. An amended resolution cleared the way for a non-binding ballot question to be presented to voters in the general election on November 5th, 2024. Another resolution authorized a ballot question assessing the public’s support for Seabright’s inclusion in the Henry Hudson Regional School District.
Updates on various departmental activities provided insights into the borough’s operational status, including school events, emergency services responses, code enforcement actions, and grants received. The mayor shed light on borough events on the horizon and updated the council on the progress of the Army Corps project, which is soon to be under the voters’ purview through the aforementioned non-binding resolution.
The council’s discussions were not confined to the chambers, as the meeting highlighted other substantial undertakings that reflect the borough’s dedication to community and infrastructure enhancement. Attention was also given to the paving of streets, the refurbishment of local parks, and the integration of technological advancements like solar-powered amenities. The replacement of the Huie Park Gazebo, a structure that had served the community for over three decades, was noted, with an acknowledgment of the incoming donated replacement.
This initiative aligns with the borough’s recent workshop, which educated participants on building and updating properties in flood-prone zones.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, residents voiced their concerns on a variety of issues, ranging from feelings of being unheard at a previous meeting to queries regarding the schedule of street cleaning services.
Concluding the meeting, a motion to enter into an executive session was made.
