Hillsborough County School Board Honors Heroic Girl Scouts and Celebrates Academic and Athletic Achievements
- Meeting Overview:
The Hillsborough County School Board meeting on April 28 was a celebration of student achievements and community contributions, focusing on heroic efforts of Girl Scouts, state championship victories in wrestling, and community engagement initiatives. The meeting, led by Karen Perez, saw recognition for bravery, academic excellence, and athletic prowess, highlighting the district’s dedication to fostering a supportive and thriving educational environment.
One of the meeting’s most compelling moments was the recognition of two Girl Scouts who earned the National Life Saving Award. Brittany Dorfield from the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida Council introduced Isabel Santiago Reyes, a junior at Newsome High School, and Maggie Lewandowske, a 12-year-old from Liberty Middle School. Despite being delayed by traffic, their courageous acts were shared with the audience. Isabel was acknowledged for saving her grandmother during a medical emergency, while Maggie was celebrated for taking decisive action when her father suffered a stroke. Their bravery drew significant applause from attendees, highlighting the impact of their actions on their families and community.
The meeting also applauded the accomplishments of Hillsborough County’s wrestling champions. Isabella McFarland from King High School was honored as the 1A girls wrestling state champion. Her ambition for a repeat championship next year was noted, reflecting her determination and dedication. Arzider Ortiz from Steinbrenner High School was recognized as the 3A boys wrestling state champion in the 150-pound weight class. The presence of Principal Tiffany Ewell and Assistant Principal Jeff Duncan underscored the school’s pride in Ortiz’s remarkable achievement.
In the realm of academics, the Hillsborough Alliance of Black School Educators was celebrated for their Black History Brain Bowl competition. Finalists and champions from the Brain Bowl were introduced, with Clark Elementary taking first place in the elementary category. Williams Middle Magnet secured the top spot among middle schools after returning to the competition following a prior second-place finish.
Recognition extended to volunteers who have contributed to the district. Their efforts in enhancing educational quality and supporting students were acknowledged with gratitude and applause.
These programs aim to empower families and encourage active participation in children’s education. Dr. Elof Joseph emphasized the importance of family involvement in student achievement, while Raymond Betts highlighted the impact of engaging fathers in the educational process. Kiana Williams recognized the Blossoming Mothers Parent Empowerment Program.
Sustainability efforts were also celebrated, with the Hillsborough County Public Schools Green Team recognizing 55 schools for earning their Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle badges. Additionally, 15 more sites achieved Energy Star certification.
