- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting of the Hillsborough Borough Council, strides were made in addressing public safety and community wellness. The gathering encompassed a variety of topics, among which the implementation of a new traffic signal turn arrow at Raider Boulevard and the proclamation of June 7th, 2024 as National Gun Violence Awareness Day stood out as one notable issues.
The Engineering Department’s announcement of the new traffic signal turn arrow is a response to improve traffic flow and enhance safety on Raider Boulevard, a key area of concern for residents. This initiative is part of a broader effort to address traffic-related issues in the township.
Amid discussions on public safety, the meeting took a solemn turn with the proclamation of National Gun Violence Awareness Day. The council renewed their commitment to reducing gun violence and encouraging responsible gun ownership. This proclamation was made in partnership with representatives from the New Jersey chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, who expressed their gratitude for the council’s support in addressing the gun violence crisis.
In addition to safety measures, the council addressed several community-enhancing initiatives and recognitions. Jamie Criid, a senior at Hillsborough High School, was honored for her Gold Award-winning robotics project which established a robotics pathway for students from middle school to high school. Similarly, Sam Conard was acknowledged for his longstanding service to the community, contributing to the agriculture Advisory Board, the sustainable Hillsborough steering committee, and the Hillsborough planning board.
The council also declared May as ALS awareness month.
In terms of community engagement and activities, the council celebrated the successful Veterans Parade and other initiatives such as early voting for the primary election, National Night Out, and a veteran information session.
The council also discussed financial matters, including a grant request for Duke’s Parkway improvements estimated at $750,000, linked to the Paving and capital program.
On a cultural note, the Arts in the Parks program, coordinated by the sustainable Hillsborough steering committee, was reported to be off to a great start, with community members painting sidewalk panels at Van Middlesworth Park. Additionally, the council recognized June as Pride Month.
Other noteworthy discussions included the introduction of a new inspection scheduling procedure by the Building Department, the availability of passes for a cleanup program by the Public Works department, and the introduction of an ordinance to amend the salary range ordinance.
