Hillsborough Township Secures $356,000 Grant for Road Improvement Amid Celebrations and Appointments
- Meeting Overview:
The Hillsborough Borough Council meeting on December 10, 2024, was marked by announcements, including the allocation of a $356,000 local aid grant from the New Jersey Department of Transportation for the paving of Duke’s Parkway West. Alongside infrastructure updates, the meeting celebrated the swearing-in of new police officers, recognized community achievements, and addressed financial resolutions impacting the township’s future projects.
This substantial funding will cover approximately half of the project cost for the paving of Duke’s Parkway West, a crucial thoroughfare in the township. Notably, the township is also collaborating with the New Jersey Department of Transportation and local police to address concerns related to the narrowing of State Road 206, a state-controlled roadway that has posed challenges in terms of accessibility.
Infrastructure was not the only focus of the meeting, as several community achievements were celebrated, highlighting the township’s vibrant community spirit. The meeting featured a ceremonial swearing-in of new police officers, including Brandon Bodin, Justin Male, and Travis Warno. The officers took an oath to support both the United States and New Jersey Constitutions, with family members participating in the joyful ceremony by pinning badges on the new officers. The Captain of the police department emphasized the importance of community support for the officers and acknowledged the families for their important role in the officers’ success.
Recognition was also given to members of the community who have contributed to Hillsborough’s reputation as an exemplary township. Private Sage Blanks, a Hillsborough High School graduate, was acknowledged for completing Marine basic training, earning the highest Badge of Expert Shooter, and being part of a distinguished platoon. His achievements were lauded by the mayor and council, reflecting pride in his dedication and service.
Additionally, David Lee Coleman was posthumously honored as Veteran of the Year, with his daughter accepting the recognition on his behalf. Coleman, a U.S. Navy veteran and founder of the local VFW Post, was celebrated for his substantial contributions to veterans and the community. His legacy will be commemorated with a plaque on the township’s veterans wall.
Furthermore, Samantha Ball, the Assistant Planner and Sustainability Program Manager, was recognized for her exceptional contributions to sustainability efforts in the township. Ball attributed the success to the collaborative efforts across various departments.
The meeting also addressed financial resolutions under the consent agenda, notably the decision to cancel approximately $479,000 in Capital Improvement authorization balances from outdated capital projects. These funds, previously unspent, will be redirected into the Capital fund balance, potentially offsetting other unfunded projects. The council discussed the oversight that led to these funds only now being identified, with a suggestion to consider a different audit firm for future reviews to enhance financial assessments and advice.
In addition to these discussions, the council conducted public hearings on several ordinances, including amendments to local property maintenance regulations and updates to align with state requirements for stormwater management and tree preservation. These ordinances were adopted without objections.
