Hillside School Board Discusses Mental Health, Academic Achievements, and Budget Constraints
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Hillside School Board meeting tackled issues impacting the district, including mental health challenges, academic achievements, and budget discussions. Superintendent Erskine Glover emphasized the importance of creating supportive environments for students and staff while outlining district priorities such as leadership, innovation, and character development. The meeting also highlighted the community’s cultural diversity and efforts to address rising concerns about drug use among youth.
17:37A significant portion of the meeting focused on mental health and the emotional wellbeing of students and staff. Superintendent Glover and other members of the board underscored the necessity for a mentally safe environment, citing a recent incident where a staff member successfully intervened to assist a student in distress. The board recognized Miss Lorraine Gardner, the staff member involved, and Principal Alvarez expressed gratitude for her actions.
The discussion on mental health extended to the community level, with a call to action for residents to attend an upcoming event addressing a state of emergency related to youth drug use, particularly focusing on vaping and marijuana. This event will feature a panel discussion to explore these issues from various perspectives, including mental health and legal standpoints, with the aim of finding comprehensive solutions.
04:45In addition to mental health, academic achievements were a key focus. The board celebrated the accomplishments of students, such as Joam Wei, a fourth grader who won third place in the Union County Arbor Day poetry contest. Under the guidance of his teacher, Joam read his poem, “An Arbor of Trees,” to the audience, who responded with applause. The district’s emphasis on reading was further evidenced by the distribution of 21,474 books to students this year. Superintendent Glover shared a statistic that reading for just 20 minutes a day could expose students to 1.8 million words over a school year.
01:29Recognition was also given to 21 seniors from Hillside High School who received New Jersey’s seal of biliteracy, indicating proficiency in multiple languages, such as French, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, and Spanish. Increased resources have been allocated to support their education, including hiring more ESL teachers.
09:59The board also addressed upcoming changes regarding cell phone policies, dictated by new state regulations, which will affect one of the schools in the district. This shift highlights the district’s adaptation to evolving educational standards and policies.
24:20Budget constraints were a significant topic of discussion, with debates around the necessity of balancing financial constraints while maintaining high educational standards. A proposed 2% tax levy, equating to approximately $2,322 per child, raised concerns about the impact on families. However, the board asserted that this funding would support a range of educational programs and services, including home libraries, science partnerships, and extracurricular activities. Superintendent Glover emphasized the importance of retaining staff and programs despite financial challenges, and the need for continued support and resources to ensure student success.
27:56The meeting also revealed positive trends in student performance metrics, particularly in relation to tutoring programs aimed at assisting students below grade level. Additionally, attendance rates averaged over 94%, with 76% of seniors committing to higher education, including both four-year and two-year institutions. These statistics reflect the district’s progress in improving educational outcomes despite financial constraints.
36:00The meeting concluded with a public comments segment, where community members expressed gratitude for district initiatives such as the Scholastics program, which was described as a “labor of love” for the children. The board also acknowledged the resignation of James Bevere, the director of curriculum instruction, who is transitioning to a superintendency. Bevere expressed appreciation for Superintendent Glover’s mentorship and emphasized the importance of retaining Glover in his current role.
