Hillside School Board Meeting Celebrates Student Achievements and Community Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
At the latest Hillside School Board meeting, student accomplishments and community involvement were at the forefront. Noteworthy recognitions included accolades for Hillside High School’s student council, high honors for performing arts, and the success of leadership development programs. The meeting also covered public comments on community events, upcoming school activities, and administrative updates.
The most notable highlight of the meeting was the recognition of Uea Gayishi, a student who stood out as one of seven winners in a statewide stock market challenge. This achievement, organized by Alpha Fi Alpha Fraternity Inc., underscored the district’s emphasis on academic excellence and student engagement in real-world applications. Furthermore, Hillside High School’s student council was awarded the National Gold Council of Excellence for the third consecutive year.
Dr. Perez, the Superintendent, shared additional accolades, including four nominations for the performing arts club at the Foxy Awards, scheduled to take place at Montclair State University in May. The induction of students into the National Honor Arts Society and the Hispanic Honor Society also marked significant milestones, with 14 students becoming the first members of the latter.
Public comments during the meeting provided a platform for community members to express gratitude and concern. A speaker praised the success of a recent “Bring Your Children to Work Day” and the “Spring Into Conversation” event, both of which fostered community engagement and dialogue. However, it was noted that communication gaps exist, as many parents were reportedly unaware of these events.
Dan Denos of Leaders 21st Century highlighted the positive impact of leadership development programs, which have improved students’ confidence and readiness for post-secondary education. He invited board members to an upcoming citywide symposium aimed at enhancing student networking and collaboration. This initiative aligns with the district’s goals of preparing students for college and the workforce by providing them with essential skills and opportunities.
The meeting also included committee reports, with insights into finance, education, policy, and labor relations. These reports addressed ongoing discussions about resignations, retirements, and terminations. The finance committee, which met on April 30, tackled various agenda and non-agenda items, while the education committee reviewed ten agenda items.
In discussing the district’s future, the board highlighted upcoming events such as the second annual daddy-daughter dance and a multicultural night featuring cultural presentations.
In addressing serious incidents, the board commended the swift actions of staff and Dr. Perez in response to a student-related issue on Route 22.
The meeting concluded with reminders about an upcoming special meeting on May 5 to discuss the budget, encouraging public participation.
