Hoboken High School Earns College Board AP Honor Roll Recognition
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Hoboken School Board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Christine Johnson proudly announced that Hoboken High School has been named a College Board AP School Honor Roll recipient for 2024. Achieving bronze level criteria in college culture and college credit categories, the school also received a platinum level distinction in the college optimization category, underscoring its efforts in ensuring students not only enroll in Advanced Placement courses but also earn college credit.
Dr. Johnson shared additional insights into the district’s educational initiatives aimed at addressing achievement gaps, including the integration of tutoring and academic support within the school day. The use of varsity tutors for on-demand academic assistance complements the work of reading specialists focusing on foundational literacy skills at the elementary level. She also noted the presence of career and academic success centers at the high school level, which guide students in their academic journeys towards graduation and beyond.
Another highlight from the meeting was the commendation of Jay Malik, a high school student celebrated for earning third place in the Congressional App Challenge. His creation of an app named Microchia AI, designed to assist individuals with a congenital condition affecting hearing, was particularly noted. Mr. Fernandez, the supervisor of science and innovative technology, praised Jay’s innovative spirit and contributions to the community, encouraging other students to look up to him as an example.
The board meeting also featured student recognitions, celebrating achievements across different schools in the district. Students were acknowledged not only for academic excellence but also for personal qualities such as kindness, leadership, and perseverance. Ryan Weissman, Justice Bryant, Melissa Santiago, Kaden Atkins, and Caen Garcia were all celebrated as Students of the Month from their respective schools, each embodying the district’s values of character development alongside academic success. These recognitions underscored the collective pride in the students’ accomplishments and the collaborative efforts from home and school that contribute to their success.
Additionally, the meeting included updates on various school activities and events. Hoboken Middle School representatives highlighted their first Tiger Assembly and community engagement initiatives, including a dinner at Monroe Gardens that fostered connections between the school and families. The high school’s student government representative reported on successful events such as a blood drive and upcoming activities, including a winter formal and participation in the Harvard Model Congress.
In terms of district operations, Dr. Johnson touched upon challenges related to rising health care costs and ongoing facility needs, emphasizing the need for fiscal responsibility while addressing the needs of students and staff. Updates on facility projects, including the HVAC project at Wallace Elementary School and elevator issues at Hoboken Middle School, were discussed, with a focus on ensuring safe and conducive learning environments.
